How to Plan the Perfect Riverside Stay in Bangkok

The Calmer Side of Bangkok!

Staying by the river in Bangkok offers quite a different experience from staying elsewhere in the city. You are still in the city, but it will feel much quieter. Planning the right stay helps you enjoy this contrast without missing out on what the city has to offer. Here is how you can do it during your stay in Bangkok.

Pick the Right Riverside Area

You should start by choosing which part of the river to stay near. The Chao Phraya River runs through the heart of Bangkok. It connects major landmarks, temples, markets, and shopping areas. Areas like Sathorn, Bang Rak, and Thonburi have various riverside hotels. Sathorn has better public transport, whereas Thonburi has more of a local feel with fewer tourists. Also, think about what kind of trip you want. If you want nightlife and easy transport, stay closer to Sathorn, whereas if you want peace and more of a traditional setting, Thonburi may suit you better.

Choose a Hotel with a River View

Not all riverside hotels give you a good view. Whereas, Avani+ Riverside Bangkok Hotel will give you great options of rooms that face the river. Ask for upper-floor rooms to avoid blocked views. Some hotels offer private balconies, which are perfect for watching boats pass by or relaxing in the evening while staying at your riverside hotel in Bangkok. A riverside pool or restaurant also adds to your stay. Check photos and reviews before booking. If you're unsure, email the hotel and ask about the view from specific room types.

Use the River for Transport

Staying by the river makes boat transport easy. Use the Chao Phraya Express Boat or tourist boats to reach temples, markets, and the Grand Palace. It’s often faster than taxis or trains during traffic hours. Many hotels offer free shuttle boats to nearby piers or malls. Be sure to ask about this when booking. Boat rides also help you see daily life on the river; kids swimming, food boats passing, monks collecting alms.

Visit Local Spots Near the River

Some of the best places in Bangkok are close to the water. Walk around the old markets in Bang Rak. Try the street food near Wang Lang Market in Thonburi. Visit temples like Wat Arun and Wat Pho without needing to cross busy roads. Ask locals or hotel staff for recommendations. Smaller shops and cafes in riverside alleys often surprise you. Don’t just stick to big-name places. A small family-run noodle shop or boat pier cafe can make your stay feel more real.

Plan Around Sunrise or Sunset

The river looks different depending on the time. Wake up early and walk by the water during sunrise. It's cooler and quieter. You’ll see monks on their rounds and shopkeepers setting up. Evening brings river cruises, dinner boats, and golden light. If your hotel has a terrace, sit with a drink and enjoy the view. Bangkok can feel busy, but the river gives you space to slow down.

Look for Riverside Experiences

Some hotels offer riverside yoga, cooking classes, or boat dinners, so it is best to ask what's available before you book. Join if it fits your interests, as these activities don’t just fill time; they give you a better sense of the place. Joining some of these small activities will stay with you long after the trip ends.

Convenient City Access

The riverside makes for a peaceful place, but it is important to make sure your hotel is connected well with the rest of Bangkok. Be sure to make sure you have close by for access to the BTS Skytrain or shuttle boats to major piers. This helps you get to malls, markets, or the airport faster. Finding a good balance is key, and a quiet stay that still links you to the rest of the city will work best.
