Tumblr, is the only social networking and blogging tool that allows you to customize your pages heavily and publish short blog posts. One more exciting thing is that you can also have up to one blog on Tumblr to stay connected with more people worldwide.

Moreover, it is a world of exciting tools that helps you to make more attractive blog posts, stories, and much more. Tumblr provides a step-by-step guide about each and everything, but there are some technical issues that people don't understand; I always try to make them clear and understandable. So, today the topic is about how you can change your main blog username on Tumblr. Firstly, we would like to educate you about the types of blogs on Tumblr.

You'll understand the consequence of this explanation later and easily change your username accordingly.

So, there are two types of blogs on Tumblr.

  • Primary Blog
  • Secondary blog

Primary Blog

In simple words, the first blog you created when you signed up for Tumblr is your primary blog. It'll give you authority to use all of the features offered by Tumblr, including follow, like, ask, and submit, or everything that is mainly handling all of the other blogs you'll create from this. Also, whatever you like, follow, or comment on will accumulate on this blog.

Let me explain; you can see "mysampleblog," below, which I've just created to show you that" the primary Tumblr blog is always on top by default with a star presenting on it." While all others side blogs.

The bolded are Tumblr names. For example, "saleblog1" is the username for sampleblog1 Tumblr blog, a secondary blog. Also, "mysampleblogl" is the main Tumblr blog.

Secondary Blog

Also, you can see from the above screenshot that all of the blogs other than primary are secondary (which do not present with a star). "saleblog1" is my secondary blog. According to the standard Tumblr rules,

All of my post likes are accumulated to a primary blog, not in a secondary blog, or if I wanted to change the main blog username or like others posts on behalf of "saleblog1," then it needs to be changed with the primary blog.

Now, you've understood the difference between primary and secondary Tumblr blogs. Now I'm going to change my main blog username, and you can change your primary blog username to a secondary Tumblr blog by just following the simple steps I followed.

A step-by-step method to change your Tumblr blog username:

  1. Go to the secondary blog settings by using this link https://www.tumblr.com/settings/blog/saleblog1. Replace saleblog1 with your secondary blog name.
  2. When you've reached secondary blog settings, you'll find a "pencil icon," click on it to change your URL or username.
  3. Change the blog username with an alternative one. For example, saleblog12 or saleblog13, etc., I hope you'll get the idea. See in the above picture how I changed from saleblog1 to saleblog12. You should keep in mind that it takes 24 hours sometimes because Tumblr needs additional verification and like to give you some time to think again about your decision to change the username. I received that message from Tumblr when I changed the username, "We hold your old username for you for one day, just in case you change your mind or want to use it on a different blog." I think that's a pretty much good decision by Tumblr for its users to protect their usernames.
  4. Here you can see the secondary blog setting page. I've successfully changed the username from "saleblog1,' to "saleblog12." Now, you've almost done the half! Let's go to change the primary blog name in step 5.
  5. Click on "mysampleblog" on the sidebar, which is our main blog. When you've reached this page, click on the pencil icon to change the primary blog username.
  6. Now, complete this step carefully that you have to change the primary blog username with that secondary blog username you changed just a moment ago, which is "saleblog1." So, replace "mysampleblog" with "saleblog1." Here! You could see how I did this. You can also do that by just following the simple steps that I followed. Now, click on the save button to save the username that we've changed.
  7. You can see from the below picture. We've successfully changed the primary blog username with the secondary one. Now, all of my posts and likes will be accumulated to this blog, and it'll get the authority to handle and manage all of the secondary blogs but, after 24 hours when I've received a confirmation email from Tumblr. Did you remember this?

"We will hold the old username for you for 24 hours, just in case you change your mind or want to use it on a different blog."

You can change this anytime by following the simple steps that I've explained above in thorough detail with a practical example.
