How Quickly Can You Adapt?

A Story From My Life Yesterday

By Dr. Cody Dakota Wooten, DFM, DHM, DAS (hc)Published 3 years ago 3 min read

Yesterday I was getting ready to do some work on a tool that I use for my business, getting ready to do the normal thing I do.

However, when I got onto the tool, I suddenly found that pretty much everything had changed!

Things weren't in the same place, nothing looked the same, I quickly found that some aspects were not working right.

It looked like it was going to be a major learning curve.

Often, when people face a challenge like that, they simply give up and say it isn't worth the time.

I could have done that too.

I could have been angry, or frustrated, but I wasn't.

I chose a different path.

The Path I Chose

Often, what looks complicated is actually just a small hiccup or misunderstanding that can be quickly overcome.

Often, what we don't realize is that situations like this can become huge opportunities.

I already had a good grasp of the tool overall, so I knew how things "should" work overall.

This means that there wasn't a huge learning curve (like I had at the beginning of using the tool, or if I had decided to change to some other tool).

Along with this, "Novelty" is a Flow Trigger.

In this situation, things not being where they were before, forced me into a novel environment.

I had the ability to rediscover aspects of the tool and to figure out where things now went, which pushed me into Flow quickly.

In other aspects of my life, I have worked on keeping my Dis-Stress lower and have been doing a lot of work to recover Stress Damage.

This means that my Stress Levels overall were low prior to this, which means that I didn't need to "Decrease" my Stress to get into the correct "Challenge-Skill Balance" to find the Flow Channel.

If my Stress HAD been really high, it would have been much more difficult to get to the "Release" stage of the Flow Cycle.

By keeping my Stress in check, and not letting situations like this get to me, I am able to get to Flow fairly easily and frequently.

I also used the opportunity to reach out to the support team for help with the tool to help with what wasn't working right.

Most people in the situation would be frustrated, potentially leading to yelling and more stress.

However, I went with curiosity instead, like a detective looking for things to be fixed.

Curiosity is another Flow trigger, helping me dive even deeper into Flow.

Along with this, the Support appreciated the kindness and help with finding the bugs in the system, and it even led to me speaking with the creator of the tool!

By working together, we were actually able to fix a lot of the challenges pretty quickly and get some fast solutions!

I continued to adapt and use Flow states to still get everything done!

The Gift Of Adaptation

Being forced to Adapt in your life is often uncomfortable, but it can also be an extremely powerful tool!

You can sit, whine, or be angry about the changes that are outside of your control.

However, it will only cause you Dis-Stress in a world that is already overflowing with Dis-Stress.

Or, you can find the opportunity within the adversity.

Adaptation is a natural part of life, at all levels.

We grow as people (at least hopefully), becoming better as we accept new Adaptation.

Our environments will change and become better as it continues to Adapt (Overall at least - we'll still have plenty of things that need to be fixed, but it works faster when we work together).

Technology will change, and sometimes it's confusing and unexpected, but we've watched technology flourish and allow us to do some pretty amazing things in our lives!

When we face adversity, accept it, stand up with courage, and move forward, all sorts of amazing things can be done in life!

This is how I try to look at everything that happens - the good, the bad, the ugly, and the weird!
