Here’s Why I Will Never Write An Article Using AI
Because I’m a control freak, and so much more
I keep seeing articles on Medium, Vocal, and numerous other platforms, especially the last few weeks, and they all have a similar headline.
"How I write six solid articles a day on medium"
Or, some version of that.
My mind takes me to a fork in the road. Do I see this as clickbait, or does this writer actually have a solid way of doing this?
Inevitable, it’s the same article each time.
“And so I discovered AI, and since then my writing has never been the same”…
I have a few complaints, issues, and concerns with AI. I’m curious as to whether other people have them, too.
I feel like my work should actually be MY work
Each story, regardless of its popularity or ingenuity, means something to me. It doesn’t have to be perfectly crafted or perfectly drafted… but it’s mine. I took time, I put in the effort, and to me, that means something.
I don’t know if I’m an old-fashioned person in a millennial body, but I want to work hard for the successes I have in life. That hard work makes those successes so much more worth achieving.
AI, from the articles I’ve read, might pump out a lot of words in a short amount of time, but those articles lack the personality they had when the author actually wrote it out.
There are things I want to say, things I want to convey, and a robot won’t do that for me.
My personality is hidden, maybe not so well, inside my words, and I wouldn’t want to change that.
It seems like the easy way out
I want to get better at my craft. I’m nowhere near perfect, but I want the opportunity to keep trying to get as close to my idea of perfection as I can.
AI means letting the computer do it for you. You don’t have to work on your grammar skills, and you don’t get to work on your typing speed. Efficiency in writing is something to aim for. AI takes that away.
Being able to crank out an amazing article in 30 minutes, unassisted is an adrenaline rush.
The articles sound robotic
And it’s probably because a robot is doing the work.
Do you think famous musicians and writers use AI to write their songs? NO. Because those songs are meant to convey emotion and to bring a connection with the audience.
With AI, you’re adding a middleman and taking away that very connection that will build a loyal and truly interested audience.
The article length is either too long or too short
Article length is important on Medium. The money you make is dictated by the time readers take on your articles. If it’s too long, attention spans dry out. Unless it’s extremely compelling, a 1 article might not be the key to success.
It’s really easy to ramble on when speaking out loud. And, in doing so, articles might be 15 minutes longer.
On the other hand, an article might wind up being really short, shorter than needed. I read one the other day, written using AI, and the concept was fantastic, but reading a paragraph out loud doesn’t take as long as writing one. Because of this, it lacked context and extra content that would’ve added a lot of life to the article.
It felt dry and deserted, and that’s unfortunate.
The editing takes longer
Not only do you have to fix whatever errors the AI program makes while writing, but you need to do the editing you would typically do on top of it.
People will claim it’s almost ‘error-free’, but no. It isn’t.
I know this because when I open an article written with AI, I almost immediately notice more grammatical and spelling errors.
If you’re spending your time fixing what the computer did, you may not have time to tweak the little things that you would’ve done if you’d written the article.
I take ownership of my mistakes
When I fuck shit up in my articles, I like to be able to go back and say, “Okay that sucked. That article was bad, and here’s why…”
I can go back and glance at my own errors. Human errors.
It instills a sense of false pride when a person says, “Oh, the AI made that mistake, not me.”… and I’ve heard it.
I want to own my mistakes and learn from them.
This completely cuts out the opportunity to do that.
I know that people have good intentions, most of the time
And, I know people want to find ways to make more money and become successful. But the path to success is paved with hard fucking work.
Not robots.
Keep learning and accepting your mistakes. Don’t use a shortcut and stop getting better because of it. If you want real growth, don’t bow down to the machines.
I’m on a journey to learn as much as possible, not only about writing but about life in general. And, if I start letting myself off easy and getting lazy, I’m going to get complacent.
I don’t want to be sixty years old and wonder why my writing eventually got boring or stalled out completely.
Don’t expect perfection, just aim for your own version of it.
You do not need a robot to be successful.
