I had a revelation as a corporate employee turned self-employed entrepreneur. After 10 years of being a corporate employee I had been engrained into a world of employee rules, shitty office politics, balancing the status quo, while massaging the egos of directors that had no business being directors, only that they were probably once on a couch casting call that got them the job or they had happily trod on people on the way up the corporate ladder, leaving a trail of skeletons behind them. You could never do 'too' well and frequently had to massage the fragile egos of ill-equipped, skilless middle management in the corporate world. Remember those times? It was gross. A different type of getting into bed with a business that no one wants to hold hands with. The kind that would make you look twice in the mirror in the morning before you left for work, you would look at yourself and ask why you were lying to yourself to keep your job. But there's good news.
Get into bed with business...
After years of working with colleagues that often came and went in the department, while never knowing who the poor sod was going to be replaced by, even though I have great memories of some of my corporate work-family, you really had no choice of who you worked with, something now that has made me realise that corporate world has made me believe that business relationships I couldn't choose.
Something so easy, something so simple.
It was a revelation that smacked me in the face --- I get to choose who I get to work with NOW?! Yes, you get that to choose who you work with Carly, when you go at it on your own, minus the corporate world. Getting clients is not only about making the sale, it's also about selling and nurturing the relationship. Why would you want to be in a business with someone you don't like, like in that corporate job of yours. Sadly, the corporate business world can leave you feeling like a tool. AND in some cases... that work conditioning starts to take over your life. You start to wait for permission, approval, feedback before you make any moves for yourself. When enough people treat you like a tool for long enough, it's all you know. And then it becomes hard to show up as a leader when you eventually do branch off and start your own business and gain clients
A lady in a group once spoke of her dismay of not being able to get clients. I softly whispered to her that getting clients is like going on a date and dance, a skill that is never learned in a corporate role. You don't know when you're likely to get that commitment, but you'll learn the signs to know if the feelings mutual from your client - you wouldn't expect to get a proposal from a prospective husband on the first date for sure, this is the same in the business world. Clients want to get to know you too, they want to know your boundaries, and sometimes test those boundaries. Boundaries are important and I can show you how to make effective ones. Your new prospective clients want to know they can trust you with their brand, that you can make the right decisions, laugh at what they laugh at. No one wants to be in a dull business working relationship. You don't have to accept working with just anyone like in the corporate working world. Why would you get into a business with a client that you didn't gel with their views and work ethic of their type of business?
