Discovering Vocal...

Where I can say "Here!"

By Ashley Nicole BournePublished 5 years ago 3 min read

A few months ago, I was scrolling on my Facebook timeline, liking random memes, reading the comments underneath a Tasty video, or going down memory lane looking at the horrible photos I took when I was twelve. I was always trying to “discover” myself whenever I entered the world of social media. I have always yearned to be someone great. I didn’t know what I wanted to be known for, but I know I wanted people to show me appreciation. (Wow, this is the most Leo-ness thing I ever said!) Anywho, I wanted to make an impact, I wanted to be an inspiration, and just be different. After graduating from college, I have been trying to create as much content as I can because I know I will never have another chance in time like this. I had created skits, Youtube videos, and have done videos with friends. However, something in me kept feeling missing. I pondered for a bit and realized that the missing feeling I was experiencing was my main talent. Writing.

I know many people don’t read often, and if they do it is usually something that they can digest quickly. Writing isn’t like dancing, playing an instrument, or singing. You can’t go up to a person and say “Hey, write something right now! Show me what you got.” A lot of writing is re-writing, it’s time dedicated to perfecting your content, and going over it a million times until you can finally say “Done!” after hours of crying about whether or not people will like your work. It’s a process. I can show my acting skills (kind of), I can show my improvisation skills, I can show my online content, but writing? I can show the thousands of scrap papers, untitled Google docs, or some finished pieces in my folder. I needed something official where I can say “Here!” I wanted to find something that I can publish my work without having to break the bank or worry about copyright.

One day, as a fresh graduate jumping from one job website to another, I decided to go on Facebook to waste some hours. I saw an advertisement for Vocal Media. At first, it looked like some scammy-ass site that it seemed like your ideas and money would be taken from you. I thought, “Nah, I’ll find another way to post my work.” The shit popped up again, but this time I was on Instagram. I thought again, “Alright, let me just read what it’s about.” Turns out, it is a website dedicated to writers who love writing. It is a very rewarding site because you can join challenges to win prizes, make some coins off of your stories, and connect with others. After I joined, I felt like I can truly utilize my talent in a way that I can say “I can’t write something this second, but I can show you.” It honestly boosted my motivation because for a while, I have looked into publication sites, but I wasn’t ready to write full-length pieces and have to deal with all of the paperwork behind them. I enjoyed writing short stories, poems, and when I felt like it, I wrote short plays too. I was searching for a space that I can dish out as much as I can without the stress of having to have things “perfect.” Vocal Media was definitely the spot for me.

Of course, Vocal Media will not be the only site I will be posting my work, but it is definitely a great start in the right direction of putting my work out there, and gaining some steam. I really do love writing and have dreams of being a screenwriter, playwright, and poet. I still have some work to do, yet, right now I think I am in a good head space compared to when I didn’t know how to spread my talents across the social media board. I am excited for the journey ahead, I know mistakes and failures will happen, but that isn’t going to stop this writer!
