One of the reasons for the success of the creator economy is that it has also been creative in the way it earns income. Unlike traditional commerce, where companies charge customers for their services, creators usually have to come up with alternative ways to earn funds. Unlike professionals such as writers, artists, musicians, videographers, and the like of the past, today’s creators do not necessarily receive payment directly for their creative work.

Creators need to diversify their methods of earning income. Some ways they make money include:

Creators often diversify their income streams to prevent reliance on a single income source. For instance, as video sharing sites such as YouTube have grown in popularity, some creators have found that their incomes from advertisements have declined. Thus, brands are often willing to pay more for direct sponsorship, where they can see the true reach and engagement of the channel.

Sharing Advertising Revenue

Some social networks allow content creators to share the advertising revenue generated from having ads on their sites. YouTube is the best known case. For those who qualify, you get to place ads on your videos. You have to follow specific policies to do that, live in a relevant country, have more than 5,000 valid public watch hours in the last 18 months, and have more than 1,000 subscribers. YouTube takes 45% of the advertising revenue, and content creators keep the remaining 45%.

It is true that you will need more subscribers and watch hours to make a living from advertising on your YouTube channel. Just like the acting, modeling, or music industries, there is a tiny elite of top YouTubers making millions. But there is also a huge population of average or poor YouTubers who don't make a living from advertising alone. In fact, almost all YouTubers can't survive on advertising revenue alone.

In some situations, consumers make one-time payments to creators. Often, the creators sell items to paying customers, just as artists have done for years. Sometimes, the creators may have set up an eCommerce platform on their websites or may increasingly engage in social commerce.

Creative projects – artists use crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and GoFundMe to raise money to publish one-off creative products like albums, comics, books, and short films.

Subscription-based funding: Fans make payments each month to their favorite creators through a platform like Patreon, regardless of whether or not they have purchased anything specific from the creator.
