ChatGPT's growth is slowing down, while Gemini is gaining users and increasing daily usage time

Integration with Google tools and the ability to understand text, images, audio, and video boost Gemini's appeal and intensive use

ChatGPT loses momentum on mobile while Google Gemini accelerates

A report from Sensor Tower indicates that ChatGPT is beginning to experience a slowdown in download growth and monthly active users within the global mobile ecosystem.

Although OpenAI's solution maintains a global lead, with 50% of mobile downloads and 55% of total monthly active users, the recent pace points towards stabilization and increasing competitive pressure, especially due to the progress of Google Gemini.

Google Gemini surpasses ChatGPT in downloads

During the period from August to November 2025, Gemini increased its active users by 30%, partly driven by the launch of the Nano Banana image generation model. In contrast, ChatGPT only increased by 6%, reaching approximately 810 million monthly active users, a situation that suggests a point of saturation in its user base.

ChatGPT stagnates and Gemini expands its dominance: the future of AI will be multimodal and competitive

The report emphasizes that, in the United States, Android users access Gemini from the operating system twice as often as from the app, giving Google an advantage by deeply integrating it with the native mobile experience.

Gemini leads the way in multimodal artificial intelligence

Among the factors explaining Gemini's rise, its natively multimodal nature stands out: it is trained from the ground up to understand and generate text, images, audio, video, and code in an integrated manner.

Features like Gemini Live allow for expressive voice conversations and real-time image processing, as well as solving complex tasks by jointly analyzing multiple sources of information.

Gemini has a context window that can reach up to two million tokens, providing superior "memory" for tasks involving the analysis of extensive documents, long videos, and projects with large volumes of data. This advantage positions Google's tool as a leading solution in professional and technical fields.

The Sensor Tower report reveals that, although ChatGPT maintains its global leadership, its growth is stagnating in the face of Gemini's rise, which stands out with native integration and advanced multimodal features.

The mobile artificial intelligence market is showing constant diversification. Perplexity and Claude, two other prominent players, have registered year-over-year increases of 215% and 190%, respectively, in global downloads. According to Sensor Tower, the expansion of these models is intensifying competition and forcing industry leaders to accelerate the evolution of their platforms and services.

ChatGPT's year-over-year growth in downloads was 85%, falling below the industry average of 110%. In contrast, Gemini achieved year-over-year growth of 190%.

Gemini's rise is driven by both its multimodal capabilities and its integration with tools such as Google Workspace, YouTube, and Maps, components already present in the daily lives of billions of users.

Increased Usage Time and Changes in Market Dynamics

One of the most relevant findings of the Sensor Tower study is the increase in daily usage time. Gemini doubled its average, reaching 11 minutes per day per user. In contrast, ChatGPT only increased by 6% and showed a 10% decrease between July and November 2025. This trend reflects a shift in consumer habits and a potential reconfiguration of leadership among conversational AI platforms.

The rise of competitors has diversified access to conversational artificial intelligence, forcing OpenAI and other developers to innovate to avoid losing prominence in downloads and usage time.

Between May and November 2025, Gemini increased its market share in AI chatbots by three percentage points, while ChatGPT lost the same proportion. The OpenAI team itself reportedly issued an internal memo directing its efforts toward product improvement, prioritizing personalization, reliability, and image generation as strategic pillars to address the challenge.

Versatility and the Future of Applied Artificial Intelligence

Gemini's success is built upon a family of specialized models: from Gemini Flash, focused on immediate responses and mobile applications, to Gemini Pro, designed for complex reasoning in professional environments, and Gemini Ultra, the advanced solution aimed at tackling highly complex scientific and mathematical problems.

This versatility and differentiated integration capabilities enhance the platform's appeal, which continues to gain users and expand its daily use in an increasingly competitive ecosystem.

As the technological race progresses, the dynamic between ChatGPT, Gemini, and other competitors anticipates shifts in leadership and an acceleration in the incorporation of new multimodal features and personalization for all users.
