BIT (#1): Nail Robot and Its Potential for Profits in Nigeria
Business Ideas Today (BIT): Ep. 1

Welcome to Business Ideas Today (BIT) a free new series where we discuss innovative business ideas one can turn into income, especially here in Nigeria.
Today, we'll be talking about the exciting world of nails, especially about new technology currently making waves overseas and has the potential to become a real moneymaker for those who can capitalize on it here in Nigeria, and do it right. Let's get into it!

Right now, in 2025, the beauty and personal care industry is vibrant and constantly evolving, with many seeking new and exciting ways to express themselves. One way people love to do this is through nails. From regular manicures to creative nail art, people are willing and ready to invest in making their nails look and feel their best.
But the limitation that exists now is: if I have a specific design in my head, for example, I want to do nail art of a cartoon character, I would have to hope and pray that the nail technician I find is somebody that would be talented enough to replicate my design onto my nails. And I can also expect a very high price, and allot a lot of time into making sure it's done right.
Enter the brand new technology that's sweeping people away: a machine that can print virtually any design directly onto fingernails in just a matter of seconds. This isn't something extraordinary, it's real, and it is a brand new opportunity ripe for the picking here in Nigeria, for salon owners or people looking for an attractive business they can start and showcase in malls, shops, trade fairs, and the likes.
So, how does it all work, how does one get the machine, how much does it cost, and what are things to watch out for? These are all things we're going to now discuss starting with how it works.
How The Machine Works

Nail art printing machines use advanced inkjet technology to transfer digital designs onto the surface of prepared fingernails. Think of it like a mini, high-resolution printer specifically designed for nails.
Customers can choose from a vast library of pre-loaded designs, upload their own images (think logos, photos, or artwork), or even select designs from online marketplaces directly through the machine. The possibilities of what you can have on your nails are endless, offering a customization and precision that traditional hand-painted nail art often struggles to achieve every time.
Why This Business Could Succeed in Nigeria
- There is high demand for beauty services, and Nigerians, we love to look good and adapt well to new beauty trends.
- People love to find ways to stand out and this is a unique way to do it and express your unique style.
- It's very fast, and because traditional nail art can be time-consuming, these machines offer a quick and efficient way to achieve creative designs without taking up too much time. It can be good for people in a rush, or in a mall, or party; something like that.
- The technology is still relatively new in Nigeria so there's still that edge it has of being a unique and exciting service that can attract attention and bring buzz.
- There is opportunity or upselling. Beyond basic prints, you can offer premium services like embellishments (glitter, rhinestones), gel topcoats for longevity, and hand massages.
Think of examples in other markets where personalized products have boomed: things like customized phone cases, printed clothing, etc. The desire for unique and personalized items is real and people like it. Imagine a salon offering themed nail art, or the machine being available for parties or special events, or at a stand in a mall or trade fair allowing customers to get instant, personalized nail designs. There is opportunity for real money to be made. But of course, everything comes with things one must look out for.
Things to Watch Out For
- The initial investment is quite high as the cost of the nail art printing machine itself can be a significant upfront investment. You must do thorough research on different brands, their capabilities, and what the after-sales support looks like. This is very crucial.
- Like with any printing technology, these machines require specific inks and product-specific things. Understanding the cost and availability of these things in Nigeria is essential for profitability.
- Ensure that the supplier you buy it from offers reliable maintenance and technical support, or that you know a person who can do maintenance and support here for you in Nigeria. There are so many good electricians and technicians in town that should be familiar with machine handling.
- Remember that the machine runs on electricity, and so the need for good consistent and reliable electricity is crucial for operating the machine.
- While the machine automates the printing process, understanding how to prepare the nails, operate the software, troubleshoot issues, and apply finishing touches is still important. So you need to training for yourself and any staff too that will be handling the machine.
- You may also need to educate people about the benefits and possibilities of the technology, especially since it's still a relatively new concept.
How Much to Start

Right now, you can take a look at the price of different machines on Amazon. As at the time of writing this blog post, some machines are retailing for the price of $890 (approx. N1.3m) and some are retailing for even $1,200 (approx. N1.9m).
But then, there are some cheaper technologies retailing for about $170 (approx. N266,000) but these ones work a little differently and print the design onto nails that you then have to manually press on to the client's fingernails. I employ you to look at the different machines available and see which is best for you.
Beyond the machine, you should also consider the costs of consumables like inks, pre-treatment solutions, cleaning supplies, etc.
Possibility for Growth
With this business, there is an opportunity for scalability too. You can:
- Offer mobile services and cater to events, parties, or individuals who prefer at-home services.
- Partner with existing salons and offer your nail art printing services as a value-added option within established salons on a commission or rental basis.
- Offer training services once you become proficient to other aspiring nail art printing entrepreneurs.
- And if your business model proves successful, you can consider franchising to expand your reach across Nigeria.
In Conclusion
Nail art printing technology presents a unique and exciting business opportunity here in Nigeria's thriving beauty industry. While the initial investment requires careful consideration, the potential for growth and success is significant and I hope this maybe sparks something in your mind, or conjures up the image of somebody in your mind who could find this useful.
