A Black Woman’s Honest Reflection on Exhaustion, Community, and the Desire for Freedom
I’m Tired of Being Everything to Everyone
Honestly, I’m exhausted. Not the kind of tired that sleep can fix, but the soul-deep weariness that comes from giving too much of yourself for too long.
As a Black woman, I’ve been everything to everyone, a sister, a mother, a friend, a business owner, a pillar of strength, and somewhere along the way, I’ve forgotten what it feels like to just be.
I give, give, and give some more. Yet, there are days when I feel completely invisible.
Growing Up Between Two Worlds
I grew up in a small white town in the UK. My parents had moved from Ghana, West Africa, years before I was born, chasing what so many immigrants came searching for, greener pastures. And in many ways, they found them.
They built a life that looked good on paper — a house in the suburbs, three beautiful daughters, and stable nine-to-five jobs. They did everything right, by the book. They worked hard, retired in their sixties, and now, they’re enjoying their well-deserved rest.
And yet, I’ve always known that I didn’t want that life. I didn’t want the endless commutes, the obligatory Christmas parties, or the polite small talk across the white picket fences. I wanted something different. I wanted freedom.
But the truth is, even as a self-made woman — I don’t feel free.
The Invisible Weight of “Working Harder”
As a Black woman, freedom doesn’t come easy. I was raised with a heavy mantra that many of us know too well:
> “You have to work twenty times harder than everyone else just to be seen.”
That belief shaped my entire life. It made me ambitious, driven, resilient — but it also made me weary. It’s the reason I struggle to rest, the reason I feel guilty when I slow down, and the reason I keep moving even when my spirit is begging me to stop.
I want the soft life, the peace, the quiet mornings, the abundance that doesn’t demand exhaustion as proof of worthiness. But the conditioning runs deep.
Trying to Build Something for Us
For years, I’ve poured my heart into building something that uplifts my community, a business that supports and empowers Black women financially. I created the Passive Income for Black Women Initiative with so much hope. I envisioned a space where Black women could learn to create wealth, independence, and digital freedom together.
But it’s been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.
I’ve launched, re-launched, and reimagined this program several times, but the truth hurts, even many Black women don’t want to support something built for us, and by us. Some expect it for free, and others simply don’t believe in its value.
It’s disheartening. And after years of trying, sometimes I wonder if it’s worth it anymore.
When Positivity Isn’t Enough
I’m known for being positive. I love writing about making money online, growth, and mindset, and people listen when I do. But when I write from my heart, when I speak about what it feels like to be invisible, unheard, or unseen as a Black woman, the silence is deafening.
It’s painful when your truth doesn’t resonate the way your “success” does.
There are days I want to disappear completely — not out of hopelessness, but from sheer exhaustion. I’m tired of having to be strong, tired of holding the weight of expectations, tired of fighting to be heard.
The Last Attempt
I’ve set a small but meaningful goal: to sign up 20 Black women for the Passive Income for Black Women Initiative this month. It’s currently just $50, and yet, in four years, only two women have joined — both during a discounted offer.
If I don’t reach that goal by the end of the month, I’ll close the program down for good.
This isn’t about money anymore. It’s about purpose, about seeing if what I’ve built still matters.
So, if you’re reading this and you’re a Black woman who believes in community, growth, and financial freedom, this is your invitation.
Support a Black business that’s built to support you.
