4 Lessons The Last 10 Years of My Life Taught Me

Growing up

By Emmanuella AmeevorPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

I want to start out by saying I'm 20 (will turn 21 next month) So I still have a long way to go and a lot to learn

I can hardly believe it, but if there's something I've learnt, it's that there's a lot more to learn (teaser!)

If you're uncertain on how your life might unravel in your 20's, then I guess this would be a good read for you.

First things first, it's time to take control. All my life, let's say I've always been more controlled than in control and I think that can be as a result of self-esteem issues. I probably thought I wasn't worth it and my decisions were always wrong. Maybe it's the timing that has caused this to be on the list, but stepping into my twenties made me realised just how much I need to take a hold of my life. I believe from this age to 30's (maybe) determine how the rest of your life will go. The choices you make about your work, hobby, habits, friends and relationships will definitely come back to haunt you. So why don't you make choices you'll be proud of? Choice that you can defend? At least that's what the last ten years of my life taught me.

On to the next (get it?), there are endless opportunities and you get to pick whatever you want! I think this revelation came after my birthday last year and also because of the amazing people I surrounded myself with. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I didn't think what I wanted was possible. Or if I was supposed to stick to the 'traditional' path of life until my 40's maybe, then I can revive my passions then. But I've come to the realisation that I can be whatever I want (as corny as it sounds). And you can too. But there's a catch (as always right?), you have to really go for it. Give it all your all. Even times when you fail, rise back up for it because you believe in it and that's all it takes for it to work. And if it gets hard, I'm here for you.

Next on the list is I don't know everything. This looks obvious but it took me 20 years to make this conclusion so not really (unless I'm really slow). I don't know everything and I shouldn't think I do or behave like I do. And if you're like me, which odds are that you are, it's not a bad thing thankfully, because there are a lot of places that can teach you. We have the internet! It's not just a place for endless entertainment and tiktok scrolling but also for endless knowledge. If you have a question, odds are there's an answer. And from many perspectives too!

I guess the last for this list is, don't be afraid to make mistakes. How else would you learn right? It's embarrassing to make mistakes and I make like thousands a day. Over the years, I've learnt to see them as an opportunity to learn and get better instead of a sign of my clumsiness or stupidity because hey, the smartest we're also once dumb! At least that's what I tell myself. Thinking you're dumb after every mistake will ironically lead you to making even more mistakes because you wouldn't be confident in your decisions and gut choices. Plus, it's bad for your mental health and self-esteem. I admit that it gets hard to view this this way but a step at a time gets you closed to your goal. Let's just take it a day, a thought, at a time.
You'll do good! I'm sure about it.

I'm kinda unsure of how to end this. It's really my first time and I focused so much in the beginning that I forgot about the end. But things always come to an end somehow. How your life will go and end, largely depends on you and the choices you make. We can't accurately predict the future but we can make the best choices and learn from everything around us to get the best outcome.
And if you need help, I'm here for you.

This was great! Really, really well written and we can all learn more! Even me, and I’ve been around for 12406 Millenium. I still don’t know everything! Well done!
