The Hare and the Tortoise

A Lesson in Patience and Perseverance.

By ismailghaziPublished 4 months ago 3 min read

In a quiet meadow surrounded by tall oaks and whispering grasses, animals often gathered to talk, play, and sometimes brag about their talents. Among them lived Hare, the fastest runner in the forest. With sleek legs and boundless energy, Hare never missed a chance to boast.

“No one can outrun me,” Hare would say, puffing up his chest. “I’m the king of speed! Why, I can run circles around anyone here before they’ve even taken two steps.”

Most animals rolled their eyes at Hare’s arrogance, but one small, steady creature decided to speak up one sunny morning.

“That may be true,” said Tortoise in his slow, calm voice, “but speed is not the only thing that matters. Even the slowest can succeed with patience and perseverance.”

The animals gasped. Was Tortoise really challenging Hare?

Hare burst into laughter. “You? Beat me? Don’t be ridiculous! You can barely make it to the river before sunset. Fine—let’s race. Then everyone will see the truth.”

The animals quickly agreed to set up the contest. The race would stretch from the meadow, across the stream, around the hill, and back to the oak tree. Excitement buzzed in the air as birds flapped overhead and squirrels gathered nuts to snack on while watching.

When the day of the race arrived, the sun painted the sky gold. All the animals lined up to cheer. Hare stretched his legs and grinned confidently, while Tortoise positioned himself quietly at the starting line, his shell gleaming under the light.

“Ready… set… go!” cried the fox, who had agreed to be the referee.

In a flash, Hare darted forward, kicking up dust as he sped down the path. Within moments, he was so far ahead that the crowd could barely see him. Tortoise, meanwhile, moved step by steady step, his eyes fixed on the road before him.

As Hare ran, he looked back and chuckled. “This is too easy! That slowpoke is miles behind. I’ve already won.” Then, spotting a shady tree, Hare decided to rest. “Why waste my energy? I’ll take a short nap. By the time I wake up, I can still finish first without even trying.”

So Hare curled up beneath the branches and soon drifted into a deep sleep.

Meanwhile, Tortoise kept moving. His pace was slow, but his determination never wavered. He crossed the stream carefully, climbed the hill inch by inch, and descended the slope with steady patience. Some animals cheered for Hare’s speed, but others began admiring Tortoise’s quiet persistence.

Hours passed, and Tortoise finally came near the finishing line. Just then, Hare awoke with a start. He stretched and yawned. “Ah, time to end this race and show them who’s boss!” He dashed forward at lightning speed, his ears flapping in the wind.

But as he rounded the final corner, Hare’s eyes widened in shock. There was Tortoise—just a few feet from the oak tree. The crowd erupted in cheers as Tortoise crossed the finish line first, his shell shining with pride.

“Hooray for Tortoise!” the animals shouted.

Hare skidded to a halt, panting in disbelief. “How… how could this happen? I’m the fastest runner!”

Tortoise turned to him with a gentle smile. “Yes, Hare, you are swift. But speed alone is not enough. I may be slow, but I never gave up. Step by step, patience and perseverance carried me to the end.”

The lesson was clear to all. From that day on, Hare learned to temper his arrogance, and Tortoise became a symbol of determination. The animals often retold the story, reminding one another that true strength lies not in boasting, but in steady effort and quiet persistence.

And so, the meadow remained a place where every creature—fast or slow—was valued for the unique gifts they brought.

Moral: Patience and perseverance can triumph over pride and haste.
