Highlights of Arctic Exploration Polar Bears
the Arctic, but my polar bear encounters, even the brief ones, remain imprinted on my memory with surprising clarity. None more so than the encounter we had in Croker Bay, on the southern shores of Canada's Devon Island. It was early morning, well before breakfast. A heavy fog sat to the north, and our ship slowly cruised through the mirror pond waters in search for wildlife. Binoculars scanned the hillsides for any irregularities, any cream-colored dots amongst the browns and maroons of the Devon Island terrain.

Once Upon a Time, People Whistled to Communicate
Once upon a time, someone asked; if we whistle in a forest but are all alone, can anyone hear us? Whistles are interesting actions. They used it back in Paleolithic times to communicate, try to trick animals into being hunted, attract birds, and probably as mating rituals as well. Would the bride-to-be select the most melodic one to pick her suitor? Or would the strongest win the challenge? Some may have made a complete song out of it. I know I would. I will not let myself be beaten. Not whistling anyway. Wrestling is a different story.

Decades later I asked my mom what that was about and she said: “I don’t know, when he got to be three, he got ugly to me.” The other four of us didn’t know that or understand what it was about. He became the family scapegoat, taking mental and physical abuse from the brother three years older and mental abuse from the rest of us. Then my father died when he was eight and my mother moved us 2000 miles away across the country. The family went under stress, but the one brother picked on him.
