Partner's in Crime
"Don't say a Word"
They had been in this sleepy town for less than 24 hours, 12 of which they had slept at this cute but somewhat dingy motel in the dessert. It was the vibe more than anything. The rooms were upgraded and clean, but the old feel of the building, there was something to it. It was if the walls told a story. The room spoke.
This town was creepy. They both thought so. While she thought it was funny at times to hear the spirits talk, he wasn't so much a fan. He "believed" it and knew that she was somehow aware of the beyond, but that was too much to wrap his very logical brain around. It quite literally went against everything that life had prepared him for.
Yet, she somehow was the most interesting person he had ever met. And one of the most beautiful. His "type", if he were ever to have one. To him, she was perfect.
And then there were the moments where she'd have this almost devilish sparkle in her eye. He knew already it was bound to be something entertaining. That had always proved to be the case anyways. He saw something in her that he saw in no one else. And he had certainly met all types of people, as he often traveled the world.
He thought her brilliant. She thought herself to be haunted.
She on the other hand.
She had always adored him. From the moment they met in whatever aisle that was. Or the moment they'd first met eyes. He was always the one that she'd want to cast as her "main character". He was her "partner in crime", an adventure buddy, the most fascinating mind to discourse with. And that's maybe what was the most special. It was only ever him that got her that way. No one else ever came close.
So, on this night it had been her idea that landed them in the predicament they found themselves in. Well, it was originally his "suggestion", but she had spiced it up a bit as she liked to do.
"Let's go for a walk", he said.
She rolled her eyes. Then smiled and laughed, “Where to?" she paused, her smile grew.
In this moment he held his breath.
"Sure." she said simply. Then smiled again, "but only if I can dress like cat woman."
He laughed now, amused but intrigued.
"Okay", he said, "Am I to be batman?"
She disappeared for the smallest of seconds, returning with a black cape.
"Yes!", she exclaimed, giggling with excitement.
When did she pack a cape? And why?
He was interested to know the answer, but for now, he was more interested in this "walk", they would be taking.
An hour later, they had reached the full length of this ghost town.
She had brought her camera.
He loved that about her.
It kinda traveled with her.
They talked about grabbing a bite to eat, but it looked like any food joint in the vicinity was closed down or closed for the day.
"Geez, where are all the people?", she said aloud as they walked past the cute diner.
"Sleeping?", he guessed. "Wanna head back?"
At that moment she remembered there had been a creepy looking cemetery a short distance after you head out of town. Probably a ten-minute walk from where they were currently standing. They had passed it on their way in.
"I have a better idea," she started, "Let's keep walking, I want to get some pics of that cemetery we saw when we drove in."
He was going to agree, of course he was going to agree, it would prove to be a bit of an adventure at the very least. He looked at her and down at his cape.
She just looked at him with that "c'mon let's go, what are you waiting for look", as she smiled like an angel.
He smiled, as he tried not to laugh at the thought of them dressed in costume walking around in a strange town, about to walk into the cemetery.
The gates were locked in place, as the sign so boldly stated at exactly 6:00 pm or sundown, whichever came first.
“What an oddly specific sign,” he mused out loud.
She pulled out her camera and tilted it to capture the angle she was after. She snapped a few more then securely put her camera away.
She had that smile again.
Before he could say a word, she had found the best place to climb over the gates and was halfway over.
Now, these were the things that he knew they probably shouldn’t do, but her ideas were always fun, no matter how they’d ended. Without much hesitation, he quickly climbed up on over after her.
It was just about sundown now, though it was well after 6:00 pm.
They walked past the oldest graves. They walked past some fresher graves. She got some great shots against the sunset as a beautiful backdrop. That’s when she saw it. The large mausoleum directly ahead at the almost center of the cemetery, shrouded with branches from the weeping willows on either side.
She instantly marched towards it.
As they walked up to it, in all its creepiness and beauty, they noticed the intricate stained-glass windows.
He looked at her holding giddily onto her camera as she took several photos of the crypt with the last bits of sun light reflecting so strikingly on those windows.
She noticed him looking at her smiling, she grinned her eyes lighting up.
Then she reached for the door.
“Take some pics of me,” she said as she walked inside.
She handed him her camera as she crossed the threshold, he walked in behind her.
The door instantly shut and locked behind them.
He held the camera up and she posed like cat-woman directly in front of the window.
That was when the cops showed up.
