Young Man want's New Job

Being young with Disabilities and working

By Raymond Cook JrPublished 6 years ago 4 min read
Just an example of entertainment available to us all

Years ago, I needed to acquire a new skill set in an effort to find a better job. Did a little research and discovered that I could qualify for program offered by the BVR and this required a skill and education test. Scheduled the test and showed up early.

They used a conference room at my local JVS and after arriving I checked in with the facilitator giving the test and while waiting for everyone to arrive a young man with MS (I think) showed up in his wheelchair. He was there to take the test and find a new job, he currently had a position at Walmart as a greeter which his case manager had found for him...and one of the people we were waiting for.

Time passes and about 15 minutes before the start of the test, which was to last a few hours, the facilitator told everyone if you smoke time to go outside and get one in before it starts because the next break would be in couple hours. So we including the kid in the wheelchair all went outside for our fix (He didn't smoke just wanted to hang with us).

While we are outside another young man comes outside because he knew the kid in the wheelchair and wanted to say hi, they lived close to one another and knew each other well. They started up a conversation and where laughing and so on, thing that is important here is that the kid is non-vocal all he can do is try to say words and usually the sounds are close enough that if you know him and been around him you can understand what he is trying to say.

Well this other young man knew him well enough to understand most if not all of what the kid was saying. So He starts telling us that the kid had just turned 18 and his older brothers had taken him to a Go-Go bar (other wise know as Titty Bar). Remember this guy had been in a wheelchair all of his life and other then the MS he is a normal boy growing up with all the hormones a young man has to deal with, i.e. women are a very big interest as you can imagine. This was his first time seeing women in such an atmosphere and displaying all their beauty.

The conversation changes and we start talking about other things and the smoke break is over and time to go back in to do the test. We all sit down and he passes out the test sections and instructs us on how to take the test and what to do after each section after the 4 th section we could take another break. so we all get ready and make sure we got enough pencils and such when this kid's case worker finally shows up. as you can imagine she is the typical government drone trying to get places and climb that ladder, in addition to being a hot mess I mean smoking hot, designer everything clothes, purse, shoes, all of it. And at the risk of sounding like an asshole the best description I can give you of her personalty is type "A" (poster child for that cause). In a female 3 piece suit.

So Dude say's start your test so I do. While everyone gets started facilitator case manage are trying to find out since he is taking the test again what kind of job does he thing he can do? So they can evaluate the test results and see if he matches up with his desires. Well this goes on for a about 10 minutes and by know I think I know what job he is trying to tell them he wants. The kids has been saying "iitty-R over and over, now remember the smoke break? He was saying something very similar when he was talking with has friend.

So I speak up and say I think I know what he is saying they look at me like ok what the heck is it? (remember it was a look Lol) I look at the kid and ask him does he want me to repeat what I think he is saying, he looks at me like please tell them. I look at him and say are you saying "Titty Bar"? The joy that came across has face was worth seeing he starts nodding his head so hard he almost fell out of the chair. He wanted to be a greeter at a Titty Bar...what the heck is wrong with that? Walmart...Titty Bar, State house what does it matter?

Case manager's mouth hit the floor she jumped up and the look on her face said it all...close your eyes and just imagine that scene, she stood up stomped out of the room which I can only imagine as her needing a second to collect herself because she was completely caught by surprise with that and you know damn well her thoughts about that industry she knew she would blow up on this poor kid and was professional enough to go out of the room and settle down a bit before she said anything. I give her credit for handling it like she did, completely professional. And it did not help her mood when the facilitator choked back a laugh.

Well she came back in after a couple minutes and told the kid there is no training funds for that job. Pissed me off that she said it and threw my 2 cents in and said..." hey lady that is a legal industry and accepted by millions of women and men why ain't there any funding for that job...I bet its bullshit and you don't like the idea." Look on her face told me what I needed to know and finished the test.

I personally think that was to be expected from that young man. And I can see me and millions of other young men in similar situation doing exactly the same thing should the circumstances of my life mirror those of that wonderful young man.
