Wuthering Heights
The Rise and Fall of Passion at Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights is a powerful and dramatic novel written by Emily Brontë and first published in 1847. It's the only novel she ever wrote, but it became one of the most well known and unique love stories in English literature. This is not your typical romantic tale it’s dark, emotional, intense, and filled with passion, revenge, and haunting memories.
The story takes place in the wild, windy hills of Yorkshire, England, and centers around two families living in neighboring houses: Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.
The Main Characters
Heathcliff : A mysterious and moody orphan boy who is taken in by the Earnshaw family. He is deeply in love with Catherine but is also full of anger and jealousy.
Catherine Earnshaw : A lively, strong-willed girl who loves Heathcliff but chooses to marry someone else.
Edgar Linton : A kind and gentle man from Thrushcross Grange who marries Catherine.
Hindley Earnshaw : Catherine’s brother who hates Heathcliff and treats him cruelly.
Nelly Dean : The housekeeper and narrator of most of the story.
Lockwood : A visitor who hears the story from Nelly and writes it down.
The Story Begins
The book opens with Mr. Lockwood, who has rented Thrushcross Grange and becomes curious about his strange landlord, Heathcliff, who lives at Wuthering Heights. Lockwood meets the cold and unfriendly people in the house and gets the feeling something dark has happened there. Soon, the housekeeper, Nelly Dean, begins to tell him the full story.
A Love That’s Wild and Dangerous
Years ago, Mr. Earnshaw, the owner of Wuthering Heights, brought home a poor orphan boy Heathcliff and raised him as his own son. Young Catherine becomes very close to Heathcliff. They run wild together on the moors and develop a deep and passionate bond.
But when Mr. Earnshaw dies, Catherine’s brother Hindley becomes the master of the house. He hates Heathcliff and treats him like a servant. Catherine, although she loves Heathcliff, ends up marrying the wealthy and polite Edgar Linton. She believes marrying Heathcliff would ruin her social standing.
This breaks Heathcliff’s heart. He disappears for years and returns as a rich and bitter man, determined to get revenge on everyone who wronged him.
Revenge and Suffering
Heathcliff's return sets off a chain of tragic events. He takes control of Wuthering Heights, mistreats Hindley, and manipulates the next generation. He forces Isabella Linton (Edgar’s sister) to marry him, only to treat her cruelly. Catherine becomes ill from emotional stress and dies young after giving birth to her daughter, Cathy.
Heathcliff is never able to move on. His love for Catherine turns into an obsession. He even talks to her ghost and believes she haunts him. As time goes on, he tries to control the lives of their children and others around them, hoping to stay close to Catherine’s memory.
The Next Generation and Final Peace
The second half of the novel focuses on the children of the original characters: Cathy Linton, Linton Heathcliff (Heathcliff's son), and Hareton Earnshaw (Hindley’s son). At first, their lives are full of pain because of Heathcliff’s cruelty. But eventually, love and kindness begin to return.
Cathy and Hareton slowly fall in love, despite Heathcliff’s efforts to keep them apart. This new love is healthy and hopeful, unlike the dark love between Heathcliff and Catherine. In the end, Heathcliff dies, still longing for Catherine, and is finally buried next to her. Peace seems to return to Wuthering Heights.
