Why I Wrote Song About Me Not Having Big Bum or Big Breast - Ayra Starr

Ayra Starr reveals

By Jide OkonjoPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

When Nigerian singer Ayra Starr released the deluxe version of her critically acclaimed album, 19 & Dangerous, people were so focused on the hit single "Rush" that they missed some of the other songs on the album like the very daring track "Skinny Girl Anthem".

The track which starts off with Ayra Starr singing "I ain't got no ass or no titties, but I'll steal your man with my kitty. Just a look and he's with me" is a very bold song, and now, during her new interview with Afrobeats Intelligence, the singer is opening up about why exactly she wrote the song. Here is what Ayra Starr had to say.

Ayra Starr during interview

During the interview, Ayra Starr was asked: "You're a very dope writer. You write so much and even when you co-write with others, it's very visual. You write very visually across multiple themes. You have a song called 'Skinny Girl Anthem'" She responded:

AYRA STARR: [Laughs] That is the funniest song I have ever written.

"You started the song by saying "I ain't got no ass or no titties, but I'll steal your man with my kitty. Just a look and he's with me", that is a wild way to start a song. Why did you write that?"

AYRA STARR: Ha! How did I even write this song? I am just always inspired by a lot of things. I wrote "Beggie Beggie" in a bus because I saw somebody begging outside and it just inspired me. So, the weirdest things always inspire me. Why did I write this song? I think I wrote it because a girl that was my friend - I don't know if she was my friend - we just knew each other. And her boyfriend, I think she was scared her boyfriend liked me.

"But did he like you though?"

AYRA STARR: I'm not sure he liked me because like, why? I'm not sure he liked me. He didn't. It was very professional. But [the song] was just my way of saying you don't have to be insecure. I was trying to explain to her but she was still like [angry]. So I was like you know what girl? Forget that I'm skinny, forget! I can do what I want but I'm not going to do it. I wanted her to know that it's very easy for me to do what I want to do, but I'm not going to do it.

"Does she know this was about her?"

AYRA STARR: No, definitely not. Maybe she'll know now [laughs]. She's a very thick girl so it was like my love song to her, like you're beautiful, I'm beautiful, you don't have to call me out and say I'm skinny because she was trying to body shame me. And I was like thick girls are beautiful. As much as I'm writing a "Skinny Girl Anthem", we don't need an anthem. Because like why? We're beautiful, everybody is beautiful. So that was the whole point of the song.
