Why I'm Ashamed to Say What They Paid Me for 'Super Story' Song - Essence
Essence talks 'This is Super Story'

Many people may know singer Essence most popularly for her song "Facebook Love" with Jaywon, but what a lot of people don't know is that Essence is also the voice of one of Nigeria's most popualr soundtrack songs, "This is Super Story." During a new interview with Chude, Essence opens up about the lasting impact of that song, and expresses how she wasn't paid anything to brag about for the song. Here's what Essence had to say.

During the interview, Chude asked Essence about how the Super Story song 'This Is Super Story' came to be, and how she feels about the song's impact this many years later. Essence replied saying:
ESSENCE: So how the whole thing happened is I went for some breakfast meeting church thing, and the producer was just fiddling with the keyboard and he was just playing. And because I love music so you' be surprised the type of sound I know. So he was playing something and I just started singing and he was like you this small girl, where do you know this one from? I said why won't I know it?
Because music for me is not about fame or about I just want to blow, I want people to know me. I like to do my history. So, he was like "remember super story?" Then, it was a comic book when we were growing up. It was a comic book, we all read it. Papa Ajasco and all of that. So, he said it's coming to TV and he wants to do the soundtrack. So I said okay, let's sing the song and then we did the song. And then I got into university. I got to school and then things started filtering, filtering, filtering, I'm like what's going on? Now with social media everything will be everywhere, but then it took a long time for people to know who I was because my name was just there Essence, but people didn't know my face until we did a video some years later.
I'm still shocked about the success of the song, because every day I wake up, somebody has tagged me and it's Super Story. Some people are like why don't you do a remix? But it's not my song. It's not my song, I don't own the rights to the song, I just sang the song. So what do you want me to do na? I don't want to create a stare and have some legal battles. It warms my heart, it's like my child. Since '97 till now!
Then Chude asked her, if you knew it was going to blow as much as it did, would you have signed a different contract? to which Essence said:
ESSENCE: Did we use to sign contracts for these things? If I tell you how much I was given, you will pursue me from here. I can't tell you. But then, we used to do things for relationships and that relationship I have kept, it has transcended a whole lot more. But back then, oh dear.
