What I Hate about OGs and Gatekeepers in This Industry - Oxlade

Oxlade opens up

By Jide OkonjoPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Nigerian singer Oxlade during a freestyle on Glitch Africa earlier in the year called out some industry titans saying "Some gatekeepers don dey boycott me. Some OGs don dey blackmail me" and as you can imagine, that got a lot of attention. Many people wondered why exactly Oxlade made such a claim, and now during a new interview with Hotfm Radio, he is speaking about why exactly he said that. Here's what Oxlade had to say.

When asked if he's doing anything to support the upcoming artistes in Nigeria after the way he was treated, Oxlade said:

OXLADE: I don't really even like using the word 'upcoming' for them because it's been disrespected. So I'd rather call them fast rising, do you understand? I've got many collaborations with artistes coming out next year. There's Barashita, there's Azanti, there's Jacob Hunter, there's Brown Joel. See ehn, all these boys, they are literally like my babies. Because in my own time, there was nobody to really guide me and assist me, to show me how the game works. And I wouldn't want that to happen to them too. So every talent that I see that is special and has the X Factor, I personally reach out to them. I tell them how special they are. Just to boost to their confidence, bring them closer to me. I also learn from them for sure because no man is an island. But yeah definitely, there are many collaborations coming.

Speaking about what he hates most about what the OGs and gatekeepers in the industry do, as well as why he called them out for boycotting and blackmailing him, Oxlade spoke about it saying:

OXLADE: I just feel like I hate the mindset of people trying to play God. Like, they feel like they can determine your trajectory. Omo, e get some people for this game where e fit be na because say you no greet them when you see them for outside, that's why they hate you. And for me, coming from a very respectful background, I don't like to disrespect anybody. And I feel like respect is reciprocal. I wouldn't even want to give those OGs any spotlight or even talk about them right now, because we need to talk about things that matter, and they don't.
