Many of the flowers we see in spring in courtyards and gardens are planted in the fall months. September knocks on the door and takes us out into the garden to plant the autumn bulbs, as well as some ornamental shrubs.

The mainspring flowers that are planted in autumn - more precisely, between September and December - are the autumn bulbs, ie tulips, daffodils, freesias, hyacinths, irises, cranberries, and lilies of the valley.

Anemones are also planted now, as well as thuja and raspberries if we want to have some shrubs in the garden.

Let's take them one at a time and see when and how each of these plants is planted.

How to plant autumn bulbs

Autumn bulbs are planted in the autumn months, go into vegetative dormancy over the winter and open their flowers in the spring. If you choose to plant the bulbs in late fall and early winter, be careful not to get caught in the frost - autumn bulbs are planted at least 20 days before the first frost, so that they have time to take root.

It is important to choose large, healthy bulbs that have not sprouted and do not have soft parts. Small bulbs will not bloom profusely in the spring.

Once the bulbs are selected, the preparation of the soil in the garden is followed by a few simple words: first, dig holes 10–20 cm deep for each plant, then grind the removed soil (which will be reintroduced into the pit after planting) and removes plant debris.

For good soil drainage, the soil can be mixed with a little sand, and to protect the plants from frost, the planted area is then covered with leaves and sawdust.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Tulips are planted on sunny days, starting in September, until the end of autumn, at a distance of 10–20 cm between plants.
  • Daffodils can be planted in September, at a distance of about 10 cm.
  • Hyacinths are planted in sunny places at a distance of 10 cm.

How and when anemones are planted

Anemones bloom from spring to summer and are planted especially in autumn, in September and October, which ensures their early flowering. In areas with frosty winters, however, it is preferable to postpone planting until spring.

Anemones multiply by seeds or tubers and need well-drained soil and plenty of suns. It is planted at a depth of 6 cm and a distance of 10 cm between plants and watered immediately after planting and each time the substrate is dry.

Among the ornamental shrubs, in autumn you can plant emerald thuja

Thuja occidentalis (Thuja occidentalis) is planted all year round, including autumn (September-October), because, like other conifers, it thrives well in winter.

This shrub with thick and always green foliage is planted alone, in alignments, or the form of a hedge and can be left with its natural appearance or can be pruned if you want to give it another shape.

Such specimens of emerald thuja can reach, at maturity, heights of up to 15 meters.

How to plant? The emerald thuja needs a sunny or partially sunny place and well-drained and fertile soil, the planting being done in square holes, with a depth of 30 cm and large enough to cover the roots.

After planting, the plant is watered daily for 10 days, and as maintenance work, it is very important to clean the crown in the warm season.

You don't need to have a big garden to be interesting in planting different species of plants. For example, my husband loves flowers and I always help her perform small things in the garden... By small things, I mean doing the heavy work.
