Unplanned, Unstoppable: How I Became a Single Mom and Rebuilt My Life

A true story of heartbreak, courage, and finding my own way

By Joyce TsemendePublished 11 months ago 3 min read
This is me—stronger than I ever thought I could be. This is my story.

The Unexpected Beginning

I grew up believing in fairytales. Love, to me, was meant to be strong, unwavering, and built to last. I imagined the kind of love that would sweep me off my feet, the one that would endure through life’s storms. In my dreams, love was like those stories I read in books—soul mates destined to be together, overcoming every obstacle with passion and devotion.

When I met him, I thought I had found my forever. Our connection felt effortless. We laughed about the smallest things, shared our deepest fears, and painted vivid pictures of a future together. We planned for a home filled with love and warmth, where Sunday mornings were spent in bed with coffee and whispered dreams. We talked about marriage, children, and growing old side by side.

For the first time in my life, I felt safe in someone else’s arms. I believed he was my missing piece. Love wasn’t just a word between us; it was action. He held my hand tightly in crowded streets, kissed my forehead when he thought I wasn’t looking, and called just to hear my voice. He made promises—promises I never doubted. "I will always be here for you," he said one night as we lay under the stars. I believed him with every fiber of my being. But sometimes, what we dream and what life gives us are two very different things.

The first cracks were small, almost invisible. A missed call, a forgotten promise, a lingering silence that grew a little longer each time. I brushed them aside, telling myself every relationship has ups and downs. But deep inside, a quiet fear started growing, one I refused to acknowledge.

Then came the moments that made my heart sink—the way he seemed distracted when we talked, the forced smiles, the late nights spent waiting for a message that never came. I told myself he was just busy, that stress and life got in the way. After all, love like ours didn’t just disappear, right? But love isn’t just built on promises; it’s built on presence. And his presence was fading.

I remember the night I truly felt the shift. We were together, but something was off. He was right next to me, yet he felt miles away. His touch, once so warm and familiar, now felt distant. I asked him if something was wrong. He shook his head, but his eyes told a different story. I wanted to believe he was still mine, but deep down, I knew I was losing him.

Days turned into weeks, and the emotional distance grew wider. The effort he once put into us was gone, replaced with indifference. I was still holding on, hoping, praying that whatever we were going through was just a phase. But love shouldn’t feel like begging. Love shouldn’t feel like chasing someone who’s already made up their mind.

And then, one day, he walked away. He didn’t yell. He didn’t fight. He simply said, "I can’t do this anymore," and that was it. The words hung in the air, sharp and unforgiving. I felt my world collapse, but he just left, as if what we had meant nothing.

The pain was unbearable. I spent nights replaying everything, wondering what I had done wrong. Did I love too much? Was I not enough? I had given him my heart, my trust, my dreams—and in return, I was left with emptiness.

But in that emptiness, something else began to grow. A new understanding, a new strength. Love, I realized, is not about losing yourself for someone who isn’t willing to fight for you. It’s about knowing your worth, even when someone else fails to see it.

The dream of perfect love was just that—a dream. And I was about to wake up.
