Travel Gone Wrong
A Journey I'll Never Forget

Travel is meant to be an escape, an opportunity to explore new horizons, experience different cultures, and create memories that last a lifetime. However, every once in a while, those idyllic travel dreams turn into unforgettable disasters. This is the story of my "perfect" vacation that took a series of unexpected twists and left me with a lesson in patience, adaptability, and the unpredictability of travel.
The Perfect Plan
I had been dreaming of visiting Southeast Asia for years. After months of planning, I finally booked a two-week trip to Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. My itinerary was flawless — I had meticulously researched every destination, booked all my accommodations in advance, and even arranged local guides to ensure a seamless experience.
The trip kicked off in Bangkok, Thailand, where I spent my first few days soaking in the vibrant street markets, tasting local delicacies, and visiting iconic temples. Everything was going as planned until the day I was set to fly to Vietnam.
The First Sign of Trouble
As I arrived at the airport, excitement filled the air. I was eagerly anticipating my next stop: Hanoi. With my boarding pass in hand, I approached the gate, only to be informed that my flight had been delayed due to a severe tropical storm. What was initially a two-hour delay turned into an agonizing 10-hour wait at the airport. By the time my flight finally departed, my excitement had turned to exhaustion. But little did I know, this was only the beginning of my travel troubles.
The Visa Fiasco
Upon arriving in Hanoi, I was ready to forget the flight delay and dive into the rich history and vibrant energy of the city. However, as I reached the immigration counter, the officer examined my passport and asked for my visa approval letter. My heart sank. In my rush to get everything perfect, I had forgotten to apply for a visa-on-arrival approval letter for Vietnam.
I was denied entry.
After a tense discussion with immigration officers, I was given two options: return to Thailand or wait in a holding area at the airport while I applied for the visa approval letter online. I opted for the latter. With no Wi-Fi access in the immigration holding area, I was left to rely on patchy mobile data and the help of a fellow traveler, who lent me his phone. I spent the next 24 hours at the airport, tired, hungry, and frustrated, while waiting for the approval to come through.
The Backpack That Never Arrived
After finally being granted entry into Vietnam, I was relieved to leave the airport and begin my adventure. That relief, however, was short-lived. As I waited at the baggage carousel, my backpack — containing all my essentials — never appeared. After filing a lost baggage report with the airline, I was informed that my backpack had been mistakenly sent to another airport.
With nothing but the clothes on my back, I spent the first few days in Hanoi trying to track down my luggage while wearing the same outfit, borrowing toiletries from the hotel, and using the little cash I had for necessities. The airline assured me that my bag would be delivered within three days. It finally arrived — two days before I was set to leave for Cambodia.
The Unplanned Detour
By the time I arrived in Cambodia, I had become somewhat accustomed to my bad travel luck. But Cambodia had other plans for me. I had booked a tour to visit the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat, one of the world’s most iconic archaeological sites. However, upon arrival at my hotel in Siem Reap, I discovered that my booking had been canceled due to a mix-up with the hotel’s reservation system. Worse yet, the city was fully booked, and I had no place to stay.
After hours of calling hotels, guesthouses, and hostels, I finally found a place with an available room. It was far from the charming boutique hotel I had envisioned — instead, it was a rundown, windowless room in a remote area of the city. The bed was uncomfortable, the bathroom was barely functional, and the surrounding area felt unsafe. I spent the night restless, clutching my belongings and hoping that the next day would go smoother.
A Lesson in Adaptability
Despite the series of travel mishaps, I refused to let the challenges ruin my trip. The next day, I made my way to Angkor Wat and was blown away by the sheer beauty and history of the ancient temple complex. It was a moment of peace and reflection after days of chaos.
Looking back, the trip was far from what I had imagined. Yet, it became one of the most memorable experiences of my life — not because of the destinations I visited, but because of the obstacles I overcame. Travel, like life, doesn’t always go according to plan. But that’s part of the adventure. It taught me to be adaptable, to embrace the unexpected, and to find humor in the mishaps.
Travel gone wrong is something every adventurer will experience at some point. Whether it’s a missed flight, lost luggage, or visa troubles, these moments test your patience and resilience. But in the end, they often make for the best stories.
So, the next time your trip takes an unexpected turn, take a deep breath, find the humor in the situation, and remember that even the worst travel disasters are part of the journey.
