Toughing it Out: The Challenges of Living in Canada

Exploring Poverty, Discrimination, and Access to Basic Necessities in Canada

By Vijay PeriannanPublished 3 years ago 2 min read

Canada is often portrayed as a land of opportunity, where people can prosper and lead fulfilling lives. While this is true for many Canadians, there are also those who struggle to make ends meet and find it difficult to survive in this country. In this blog, we will explore some of the challenges faced by people living tough lives in Canada.

One of the most significant challenges faced by people living in Canada is poverty. Despite being a wealthy country, Canada has a high poverty rate, with nearly one in ten Canadians living in poverty. This is especially true for marginalized groups such as Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, and recent immigrants. Poverty can lead to a host of other issues, including poor health outcomes, social isolation, and inadequate housing.

Another significant issue facing many Canadians is the high cost of living. Housing prices in cities like Toronto and Vancouver are among the highest in the world, making it difficult for many people to afford a decent place to live. Other expenses, such as healthcare and childcare, can also be prohibitively expensive, making it challenging for low-income families to make ends meet.

For those living in poverty or facing financial hardship, access to basic necessities such as food and clothing can also be a struggle. Food insecurity is a growing issue in Canada, with nearly 4.5 million Canadians experiencing food insecurity in 2019. This can lead to poor health outcomes, including malnutrition, and can impact a person's ability to work or go to school.

Mental health is another area where many Canadians struggle. The stress of living in poverty or facing financial hardship can take a toll on mental health, leading to issues such as depression and anxiety. However, access to mental health services can be limited, with long wait times and high costs preventing many people from getting the help they need.

Finally, many Canadians living tough lives face discrimination and prejudice. Indigenous peoples, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community are among those who may face discrimination in housing, employment, and other areas. This can make it even more difficult for people in these groups to escape poverty or improve their circumstances.

Fortunately, there are organizations and programs in Canada that are working to support those living in tough situations. Food banks, shelters, and community organizations provide essential services to people who are struggling to make ends meet. Government programs, such as social assistance, employment insurance, and affordable housing initiatives, also exist to provide support to those in need.

In recent years, there has also been a growing awareness of the importance of addressing systemic inequalities and discrimination. Canada has made progress in recognizing and addressing these issues, such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's report on the treatment of Indigenous peoples in Canada and the implementation of anti-discrimination laws and policies.

However, more work needs to be done to create a society where everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources. This requires a collective effort from individuals, governments, and organizations to address the root causes of poverty and discrimination and to provide support to those who need it most.

In conclusion, while life in Canada can be tough for some, there are resources and programs available to support those in need. It is important for all Canadians to recognize and address the systemic issues that contribute to poverty and discrimination, and to work towards creating a more equitable and just society for everyone. By working together, we can create a better future for all Canadians.
