"Tell me the most adventurous moment of your childhood." Darion wanted to get to know Rebecca in ways that she wasn't used to. After a long pause, she flashed back to 7 year old Becca. Pigtails, overalls that ended with shorts, and the hill of a lifetime. "There was a road called Carroll Street. It was curvy and full of hills." She set the stage for a big reveal.
" One day, I was with my friend La, and we had stolen my brothers skateboard. We decided we would try and ride it down this massive hill together." As, Rebecca reminisced, she realized just how silly kids can be. "Full of courage, we shot down the hill. It was the time of my life! Unfortunately, the only brake we could find was a tree. La lost 3 teeth that day. " She shook her head and giggled.
"Well, that certainly sounds fearless!" Darion looked into Rebecca's eyes with excitement and curiosity.
Darion was eager to make a good impression. It took Rebecca 4 months to say yes to a date. He was not going to mess this up.
"So!" He said a screeched a little too loud. "The trout looks delicious."
"Yes, it does, but so does the short rib." Rebecca wasn't afraid to eat good on a first date. "I think I'll go with that!" She said.
After they ordered, Rebecca took conversational control for a while. "Now, it is my turn!"
"Shoot!" Darion said.
"Why did your demeanor change when the waiter offered us wine?" Rebecca was as observant as a snow leopard in a winter blizzard.
"You noticed, huh?" Startled, he didn't know how to say what was on his mind. "Well, if you noticed, he offered us a very low priced wine."
"Did you not think it was thoughtful of him to start low and go high?" Rebecca asked with true sincerity.
"No, love. He didn't think I could afford any better."
"Isn't that a pretty big assumption?"
"Maybe."
Rebecca didn't want to pry so they moved on. The food came and they awkwardly chewed and sniffed for the next fifteen minutes. Rebecca's short rib was so tender, but she couldn't enjoy herself. She was unable to shake what Darion had said to her about this waiter. She liked Darion, but didn't know how to move the conversation forward.
A few more minutes passed. She then quietly decided to herself that she did not need to know the answers to everything. She wanted to stand with Darion anyway she could.
"You know what?" Rebecca broke the silence and made Darion jump. "We are ordering wine. Waiter!"
Darion smirked.
The waiter walked over slowly. "Yes?"
Rebecca nodded to Darion.
He cleared his throat and straightened his posture a bit. "I would like to order wine, please."
The waiter then rolled the wine selection over to the table. The waiter began to pick up the most inexpensive Riesling they had. "No." Darion interrupted him. He surveyed all the options and then pointed to the top right corner of the cart. "This is the one."
The waiter looked concerned. "Is there a problem?" asked Darion.
"Sir, this is the Tua Rita Redigaffi Toscana. This is our most expensive Merlot."
"Yes, I hope so." Darion looked back at Rebecca and saw the support in her eyes. She was special. "This lovely lady deserves the best, and I intend on giving that to her."
"Oh, well here you are, sir." In disbelief, the waiter handed over the wine.
"That was amazing, Darion!" Said Rebecca.
"No, you are amazing." He answered back with deep passion.
He then poured two glasses of the delicious and bold red merlot. They drank and laughed the rest of the night. It was the best first date either of them had ever had. While taking one more sip for the night, Darion locked eyes with Rebecca and thought to himself the same thing he thought about the merlot.
"This is the one."
