The Valley of Lost Souls: Arjun’s Journey to True Treasure

A Tale of Courage, Discovery, and Inner Strength

By Amandeep SinghPublished about a year ago 3 min read

This is a story of a small hill village called "Neelkanth," that stood amidst lush green and towering mountains. The silence was a hallmark of this village, and the stunning blue birds that adorned rocky cliffs gave the name of the village. These blue birds were considered symbols of good fortune and were greatly highlighted in stories and folk songs passed down through generations.

There was this one boy named Arjun who used to live in a small village. Like all the other boys in the village, Arjun never had the same interest that most of the boys held - tending to the fields or tending cattle. Instead, he enjoyed reading and hearing stories. His mother always said the reality of life could not be hidden within dreams, but it is his bright eyes and curiosity told another story altogether.

One evening, Arjun's grandmother told him an ancient tale. She said that near the village there was an old valley that was the "Valley of Lost Souls." No man came in, no man out. But anyone who now ventured into that valley proceeded further than anybody in the world would have ever hoped for themselves.

Arjun's imagination ran wild. This was the adventure he had been yearning for. Determined, he resolved to uncover the mystery of the valley. Early the next morning, as the village stirred to life, Arjun set off with a small satchel of food and water, heading toward the fabled valley.

He came up a narrow, uneven track, with thorn in bloom and loose stones upon each side. Every step challenged his very reason, and there were many times when fear itself breathed for him to step away. But something was there in him—a deep, unconquerable strength—that impelled him to go on. He spied ahead the mouth of a valley, where an unaccountable whisper seemed to float around him. As if the wind itself spake it, "Beyond all fear is victory."

Arjun entered the valley. He was gaining strength and all around, mist had clung to the place everywhere; shadows danced and the dim light. From time to time, light came out in glowing blue hues, as if torches were erected to illuminate him forward. He is watchful with his strides. Then he found himself standing at the center of a huge clearing in the valley. Majestically was perched an enormous blue bird that he had never seen the likes of before with eyes that seemed to bore right into his soul.

"Who am I?" Arjun hesitated to ask. The bird spread his wings wide and began to speak with a deep, soothing voice. "I am Neelkanth, the protector of the secret that only brave and true hearts may learn. You've come this far, so you are prepared to learn of the great treasure of your life."

Questions were whirling in the head of Arjun. The bird handed him one single feather, protruded forward before he could utter a word. "This feather will take you to answers you seek. Remember, true treasure is in your deeds."

He carried the feather. Through his way, he came across a beam of light, and in it the path unfolded to return him to his village. As he walked on the beamed path, this youth Arjun felt to come alive once again, fresh and vibrant. Having collected the feather, with himself full of wisdom, the youth went back towards Neelkanth.

He soon realized that the gold or jewels were not actually treasures, but courage behind unknown, desire to know, and hidden strength. He told them about the experience, and from that moment onwards, the people motivated and inspired by the example started facing the hurdles in life, realizing their strengths from within.

Arjun becomes a flag for others because people come to realize that wealth lies not in gold dug but within each soul who develops strength, knowledge, and bravery within their life. This means that Neelkanth blossomed into a natural area where the stories of one's self-discovery have lived through generations as courage in people.
