I’m not an expert or anything when it comes to hiking but it is one of my favorite outdoor activities. I’m pretty sure though when hiking occurs, we must be responsible adults such as bringing the basics like water, etc. But apparently, our brains don’t choose the most reasonable decisions when trying to enjoy some quality time with a best friend that lives thousands of miles away. That said, this is what happened.
Being adventurous, spontaneous best friends, we decided to go on a hike, that may or may not lead to splashing around near a waterfall. She lives thousands of miles away due to her job and came to visit me for a week. I live in the desert. When the time arose, she picked me up and we headed out for some fun. As best friends we talked about adulting while listening to good music with the windows down in her car. This included going up a curvy bumpy and narrow road on a mountain to the parking spot near this waterfall.
When we finally get there and parked, I had to change quickly. When we got out of the parking station to start the hiking path, we both were confused about where this path to this waterfall was. We even had asked a few strangers if they knew where it was.
It was hot outside so we both started to head out and look for this path. When exploring this vast desert, a glimpse of the waterfall was in sight, but we had to climb down. Now the desert has not only rocks, insects, snakes, and cactuses (Pokey spikey plants), but we both had to be super careful not to cause harm since we were heading down to the waterfall “off path”. This place had giant boulders and an old barbed-wire fence. Mind you readers again it was still hot. But being responsible adults, we had the appropriate attire and had water. We walked down this hill for about thirty minutes or so to this waterfall hoping to reach it. When we were disappointed by our efforts.
Almost down to the valley, we saw that this “waterfall” was dried up and had a tiny puddle at the bottom. Disappointed we decided as reasonable adults to go back up the mountain. Like I said in the beginning I’m not an expert or anything when it comes to hiking but I’m a fit adult. The hike up this mountain was full of again, barbed wire, rocks, and spikey plants. In thirty to forty minutes, we both were about to the edge of the road, when the strangest thing happened.
My best friend was on the road cheering me on because we almost made it back up the unpaved mountain path when suddenly my feet wobbled, and I fell hard backward on my booty. I tripped on nothing! Somehow, I twisted my ankle. She helped me “To the finish line” and we walked back to her car for me to get some ice at a nearby gas station.
At the gas station and sitting in the car my best friend came out and says to me “Hey girl I found some nice ice in the ally way do you have a bag?” It just so happened I did in fact and so she grabbed handfuls of this clean unused bag of ice from the back alley of the gas station and stuffed it in my plastic bag. I used that ice on my sprained ankle I caused myself, for the rest of the day. Later that day we went for smoothies and to the pool with my swollen ankle.
Whenever we talk, my best friend and I always go back to this memory and laugh hard. The year we had our trip together and I “Tripped” on nothing and sprained my ankle. It turned out that to this day, I walk better now than I ever did in my life! I tripped on nothing after a whole ton of things I could have tripped on.
