The Story of Candyman

I dedicate this story to the late Tony Todd.

Candyman was somebody that no one wanted to see. The thought of a man with a hook for a hand was a living nightmare in the eyes of most. We look in a mirror every day and think nothing of it. The series had you on the edge of your seat.

The 1st movie was about a man with a hook for a hand. People look in a mirror, call his name 5 times and they lose their lives. No one knew the origin of this character. At the end, Helen dies in a fire.

Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh is where we learn the story of the "man with a hook for a hand." Annie, a young teacher has no idea that she is a descendant of this man that everyone is afraid of. Her father discovered this during his research. Daniel Robitaille was a slave who got Caroline, a rich white woman, pregnant. He was chased down by an angry mob who cut off his hand and smeared honey on his chest. He was stung to death by bees and his face displayed in a mirror. "Sweets to the sweet," yells the crowd. "Could she stand to look at you now?" says a man as he holds a mirror to Daniel's face. As he dies, his reflection enters the mirror.

Annie's mother is an alcoholic, probably because she cant bear the thought of the truth. Annie confronts her mother to tell her what she found out. Her mother says, “I will not have our name associated with that monster.” Annie tells her mother, “We’re his family.” Her mother says, “There is no Candyman.” Candyman later appears, his hand around the neck of Annie's mother, making a statement about her denying him as part of the family. He kills Annie's mother and and she pulls the fire alarm, Annie runs away.

The movie skips forward to where Annie has a daughter. She names her daughter Caroline. Over Caroline's bed is something similar to a chandelier with mirrors. Caroline looks up at the one of the mirrors and holds it in her hand. She starts saying: Candyman, Candyman but before she could call him for the 5th time, Annie stops her.

Candyman 3: Day of the Dead was full of intense murders. Candyman tried to frame Caroline for all of the murders. Nobody took her serious when she said that Candyman was murdering everyone. People thought she was crazy. She is the last of the bloodline so she tears down a portrait that was painted of him. This is how the story ends.

The newest Candyman was an insult to the series. It is about a student doing his research but later becomes the character himself. At the end, you catch a glimpse of the actual Candyman character, warning him to “tell them all.”

Basically, I just broke down the movie series. It’s a movie series but for some reason, I believed that chanting his name would bring severe consequences. Finally, I realized that it just a movie. It seemed so real though.

Nightmare on Elm Street and Candyman are in the same category. The only difference is that on Nightmare on Elm Street, you die in your sleep. In Candyman, you are awake but sometimes, after calling his name, if you don't do what he asks, he may kill someone you love right in front of you just to prove a point. Either way, its a lose-lose situation.

Daniel Robitaille loved Caroline and paid the ultimate price. He lost his life but his soul could not rest. The bloodline ceased, which ended his wrath. Rest in peace Tony Todd, thank you for bringing this character to life. The Candyman is a character that will never leave our minds.
