The Ripple Effect!
How Kindness of Stranger Affected My Monday Morning Commute"
Holding her coffee cup securely, Sofia rushed down the packed tube platform. Monday morning rush hour in the city once more Heads buried in phones or gaze blankly ahead, lost in their own worlds surrounded her.
Sofia saw an older woman struggling with a large shopping bag as she approached her regular place to wait for the train. The woman fought to keep her balance inching along, her aged face marked with anxiety.
As Sofia was ready to turn away and keep on her road, she noticed a young woman approaching the elderly lady. Sofia identified her as another frequent passenger on her morning route. Dressed in a nice blazer and pencil skirt, the young woman had always seemed to Sofia as the no-nonsense business type, typically speed-walking with intent and hardly looking at other passengers.
But today was unlike other days. The young professional slowed down and lightly tapped the arm of the older woman. "Ma'am, excuse me. Could you use my help with your bag? She smiled warmly and enquired.
The face of the old woman brightened with relief. Oh, dear. Thank you. Her voice quivering slightly, she said, "That's so kind of you to offer."
Sofia watched the young woman grab the heavy bag and extend her arm for support. The businesswoman matched her pace to the shuffling gait of the elderly lady as they strolled gently together towards the lifts.
Sofia listened in bits as they passed. The elderly woman was saying she was on her way to see her daughter, who had lately had a baby. To bring to the new parents, she had packed some handmade meals.
"That's really fantastic! The young woman answered with great enthusiasm, knowing they would value having you there. And those homemade dinners will be quite a delight.
As Sofia watched the lovely exchange, she felt warmth rising through her chest. This little deed of goodwill caught out in sharp contrast among the hurried morning commute. Two total strangers connecting, if just momentarily.
The train shrieked into the station, and the platform burst in action. Sofia saw the young woman once more, but without the elderly passenger as she got on. Their eyes locked momentarily, then Sofia smiled and nodded slightly in thanks. The woman grinned back, a flutter of astonishment flickering over her face at being seen.
Sofia considered what she had seen as the train staggered ahead. Offering to carry a bag, lend an arm for support, and exchange a few polite words was such a basic gesture. Still, it had the ability to brighten Sofia's as well as the day of the elderly woman.
She considered how simple it was to become caught up in the daily grind, to put on blinkers and dash from point A to point B without truly looking about us. Perhaps the world would be a gentler place if we all stopped to search for someone needing aid.
Sofia silently vowed to herself to be more conscious and to seek out chances to give a stranger a friendly word or a helping hand. She connected once more with her fellow passengers as the train shot across the dark tunnel. They were people with unique experiences and challenges, not just anonymous faces in a throng.
Sofia stepped lighter from the train at her stop. The day felt suddenly to be full with possibilities. She held the door for the man behind her as she ascended the street level stairs. Their eyes locked then they grinned.
Though hardly much, it was a beginning. Carrying with her the cosy feel of human connection and the awareness that even the tiniest deeds of kindness could set off waves of optimism in the world, Sofia set off for work.
