The Price of Change

Amina had always been proud of her identity. She wore her hijab with dignity, prayed on time, and found peace in the words of the Qur’an. She was known for her kindness, her intelligence, and the warmth she brought to everyone around her. But everything changed when she met Zayd.

Zayd was charming, confident, and carried himself with a presence that turned heads. He wasn’t like the men in Amina’s circle—he was modern, ambitious, and, as she saw it, worldly. When he spoke, she listened, and when he looked at her, she felt seen in a way she never had before.

At first, their conversations were innocent—exchanges about school, dreams, and life. But soon, Amina found herself drawn into his world, a world that clashed with the one she had always known.

“You’re beautiful, Amina,” he once told her, “but you’d look even better without that hijab.”

His words planted a seed of doubt. She had always worn it with conviction, but now, she hesitated before wrapping it around her head each morning. One day, she left home without it, telling herself it was just an experiment, just one day. But one day turned into many.

She changed the way she dressed, the way she spoke, even the way she carried herself. She stopped attending Islamic lectures, excused herself from prayer, and silenced the voice in her heart that reminded her of who she used to be. Her friends noticed. Her mother noticed. But when they questioned her, she brushed them off. “I’m just growing,” she would say.

But was she?

The deeper she fell into Zayd’s world, the more she realized she wasn’t enough—not because she lacked beauty or intelligence, but because no matter how much she changed, Zayd always found something else to critique.

“You’re too reserved.”

“You should loosen up more.”

“You worry too much.”

With every change she made, she lost another piece of herself. And then, one evening, as they sat in a café, she overheard him speaking to a friend.

“She’s great,” Zayd said with a shrug. “But I don’t think she’s really my type.”

Amina felt her heart sink. After all the changes, after sacrificing parts of her identity, she still wasn’t enough for him.

That night, she stood in front of the mirror, searching for the girl she once was. The girl who had conviction, who had faith, who knew her worth. Tears welled in her eyes as she whispered, “Ya Allah, I lost myself.”

Memories of her childhood flooded her mind—her mother’s soothing voice reciting Qur’an, the feeling of peace when she prayed, the pride she once had in her faith. A sob escaped her lips as she realized how far she had strayed.

She picked up her hijab and wrapped it around her head, feeling a sense of peace she hadn’t felt in months. The fabric felt like home, like protection, like love. And in that moment, she knew—she didn’t need to change for anyone except her Creator.

Amina walked away from Zayd, not with bitterness, but with wisdom. She learned that love should never require you to sacrifice your essence. True love would see her, value her, and cherish her for who she truly was.

As she stood in prayer that night, tears streamed down her face. She begged Allah for forgiveness, for guidance, for strength. And as she prostrated, her heart filled with something she had almost given away.

Herself.

Months later, Amina’s heart was at peace. She had reconnected with her faith, surrounded herself with people who uplifted her, and trusted that Allah’s plan was always better. Then, one day, she met someone—someone different.

Omar was kind, respectful, and shared her values. He admired her strength, her intelligence, and most importantly, her unwavering faith. Their connection was pure, rooted in deen and mutual understanding. With time, their families met, and Amina found herself standing under a canopy of twinkling lights, exchanging vows with a man who saw her for who she truly was.

As she held Omar’s hand, she realized—true love never asks you to change. It accepts you, uplifts you, and brings you closer to Allah.

And this time, Amina had found the love that was meant for her.
