The moon shines so bright at night, doesn’t it? Well, on some days it does — at least. With others, you might not even be able to pick up a hint of white; let alone witness its reflected sunlight shine down on you.
In certain ways, the moon as we see it has elements of a daintily corrupted mirror. It reflects some opulent material it receives: in this case, daytime light from the much larger sun the Earth encircles. If one catches the moon on a good day, its seeming rays look gorgeous in the eyes of many.
However, the reflected light is just that — reflected. It does not truly come from itself. Instead, its origin is from a far brighter and warmer source than it could ever possibly be. Its glow is but an optical illusion, real and unreal all at once.
There are more than quite a few things in life and the world which are like the moon, then: the ones which only let those they have a specific kind of affinity for bounce off while others are either absorbed or disappear. They exist in nature and in society; on land and in the sea.
Think of cloudy water, for example. When a body of fluid is too obscured with other particles, one cannot truly see what lies beneath its damp surface. However, light is often still capable of bouncing back from the liquid’s murky top. Sure, it may not be as it would have been if the water were more defined. But the fluid’s ray filter still shows through.
On land, there are unwashed mirrors which haven’t been used in years. Depending on the conditions in which they were stored, they could very well be poor at their original purposes of clearly reflecting the people who use them. Nonetheless, there’s still something which shows on them — even if it’s tainted and blurry.
Finally, there are actual people who are good at taking in information and ideas but choose to only selectively reveal them to their own circles. When combined with intelligence and charisma, these people stand a decent possibility of being successful.
Some of the above people use their powers for good. They network with others…and also use these networks to spread kindness, love, and joy as much as they reasonably can. You might know one of these people in your life. If so, you’re lucky. Perhaps they’re even a loved one you can trust with your secrets.
Other ones, though — not so much. Instead of being ethical, trustworthy people with solid morals; these people are ruthless. They might hold onto dangerous information which others should know — until it’s too late, perhaps. They may use the ideas they’ve gathered to antagonize other people in hopes of gaining power and dominance over them.
If you encounter someone who’s more aggressive with their seemingly reflective capabilities — watch out. They may be intelligent and cunning, but those qualities in them have a strong risk of being your own downfall. Before falling in too deep with them, ask yourself: is it worth the intensity? Or are you better off analyzing them at a distance?
There’s a good chance there are many more examples of partial reflection out there in this universe, but I’m not going to go over all of them today. What I am going to say, however, is this:
A surprising number of things in this world really are lunar. The best thing about many of them? They don’t even need to be the products of deranged and unhinged lunacy!
