The Modern Chains: How Everyone Is a Slave to Something Without Realizing It

Why Modern Life Controls Us More Than We Realize — And How to Break the Invisible Chains

By mikePublished 5 days ago 3 min read

People talk a lot about freedom. Freedom of choice, freedom of thought, freedom to live however you want. But the more you look around, the more you realize something uncomfortable:

Everyone is a slave to something — even if they think they’re free.

Not in a physical or literal way, but in a mental and behavioral sense.

In a world full of distractions, expectations, and pressures, it’s almost impossible to exist without being controlled by something.

It’s not about oppression.

It’s about habits.

It’s about attachments.

It’s about the invisible things that influence us more than we want to admit.

And the craziest part?

Most people don’t even know what’s controlling them.

A Slave to the Phone

The phone is the easiest, most obvious example.

People wake up and grab it before they even stretch. They check it every few minutes, even when nothing important is happening. Apps buzz, notifications pop up, and suddenly attention becomes a currency that everyone wants to steal.

We think we control our phones.

But the truth is, our phones control our time, our focus, our mood, and even our self-worth.

A single notification decides when you stop what you’re doing.

A like or comment decides how you feel about yourself.

Infinite scrolling traps you longer than you planned.

It’s the digital leash no one notices.

A Slave to Freedom

It sounds strange — how can someone be a slave to freedom?

But a lot of people are.

Some people fear discipline because it feels like a cage. They avoid structure because structure requires responsibility. They want to live “freely,” so they avoid commitments, avoid routines, avoid anything that looks like obligation.

But that “freedom” becomes another form of control.

When you refuse structure, you also refuse progress.

When everything is optional, nothing gets done.

When you avoid commitment, you also avoid growth.

Too much freedom turns into chaos, and chaos becomes its own prison — one where you feel lost, stuck, and confused because nothing has direction.

So in a strange way, being too free makes people trapped.

A Slave to Opinions

Another invisible chain: what people think.

A lot of people live their entire lives trying to be liked, accepted, approved, or validated. They change their personality based on who’s watching. They hide their real interests because they’re scared of judgment.

In their heads, they think they’re being smart or social.

But deep down, they’re just serving the expectations of others.

When your self-worth depends on someone else’s approval,

their opinion becomes your master.

A Slave to Money

Money is necessary — everyone knows that. But for many people, money becomes the biggest chain of all. Not because they don’t have it, but because they chase it endlessly.

Some people sacrifice their time.

Some sacrifice their health.

Some sacrifice their family, sleep, and happiness.

Money isn’t the problem.

But letting it control every decision is.

When your life is built only around earning instead of living, you stop being human and become a machine.

A Slave to Habits

The truth is, we are all controlled by the patterns we repeat daily.

  • If you always procrastinate, you’re a slave to avoidance.
  • If you always fear the future, you’re a slave to anxiety.
  • If you always stay in your comfort zone, you’re a slave to routine.

Good habits guide you.

Bad habits trap you.

Either way, habits run the show.

A Slave to the Past

Many people live more in their memories than in their reality. They replay old moments, old mistakes, old heartbreaks, old versions of themselves.

Nostalgia can be comforting, but it can also chain you to a life that no longer exists.

You can’t grow when your mind is stuck behind you.

So What’s the Point?

The point isn’t to avoid being attached to anything. That’s impossible.

The point is to choose what controls you instead of letting it choose you.

If you’re going to be “a slave” to something, let it be:

  • discipline
  • your goals
  • your growth
  • your passion
  • your purpose

Because ultimately, the only chains that matter are the ones we choose ourselves.
