The Mermaid My Father Married

Love knows no boundaries

By Author kelechiPublished about a year ago 4 min read

The first time I saw her, she was sitting by the shoreline at sunset, her silhouette etched against the fiery orange sky. Her hair cascaded like molten gold, and her skin shimmered as if kissed by the ocean itself. My father stood beside her, his weathered hand reaching out for hers. At that moment, I wasn’t just confused—I was mesmerized.

"Meet Leila," he said, his voice tinged with an emotion I hadn't heard in years. "She’s... different."

Different was an understatement. I was seventeen, and the thought of my widowed father remarrying was strange enough. But Leila wasn’t just anyone. She was a mermaid—or so he claimed.

For as long as I could remember, my father had been obsessed with the sea. After my mother passed away, it was as if the waves became his solace, the salty air his comfort. He would spend hours at the beach, gazing into the horizon. I thought it was his way of grieving, but now I wasn’t so sure.

Leila wasn’t like anyone I’d ever met. She moved with an otherworldly grace, her words soft but melodic, as if the tides themselves whispered through her voice. Her presence was enchanting yet unsettling. She never ate at the table, avoided mirrors, and seemed to disappear at odd hours.

I didn’t believe my father at first when he told me her secret. "She’s from the ocean," he said one evening, his eyes brimming with excitement, as if he were sharing a great discovery. "A real mermaid."

I laughed. It had to be a joke. A midlife crisis. Anything but what it sounded like. But then strange things began to happen.

One night, I couldn’t sleep and wandered down to the beach. There she was, sitting on a rock, her legs shimmering in the moonlight—except they weren’t legs. I froze as the moonlight revealed a silver tail, the scales glinting like precious jewels. My breath caught in my throat.

Leila turned, her eyes meeting mine. They were deep and ancient, holding secrets I couldn’t begin to comprehend. For a moment, neither of us spoke.

"You weren’t supposed to see this," she said softly, her voice carrying a hint of sadness.

"Then what am I supposed to believe?" I stammered. "That my father married a... a creature?"

She smiled faintly, her expression unreadable. "I’m not just a creature. I’m part of his world now."

Over the next few weeks, I watched their relationship with wary fascination. My father seemed happier than I’d seen him in years. He smiled more, laughed easily, and spent every possible moment with Leila. She brought a lightness to his life that had been missing since my mother’s death.

But not everything was perfect. The townsfolk began to talk. Rumors swirled about the strange woman who never seemed to fit in, who rarely left the house during the day. Some whispered that she was a witch; others claimed she was cursed.

And then there was me, caught between skepticism and wonder. Part of me wanted to protect my father from whatever enchantment Leila had cast over him. Another part of me was drawn to her mystery, to the allure of the unknown.

One evening, Leila invited me for a walk along the shore. The waves lapped gently at our feet as she spoke, her voice carrying a haunting melody.

"I know you don’t trust me," she began. "And I can’t blame you. But I love your father. He saved me."

"Saved you from what?" I asked, my curiosity finally overcoming my unease.

She hesitated, her gaze fixed on the horizon. "From a life I didn’t choose. The ocean is beautiful, but it can be cruel. I was trapped, bound by its endless depths. Your father set me free."

Her words left me speechless. There was a sincerity in her tone that was impossible to ignore.

The more I observed her, the more I realized how deeply she cared for my father. She would hum softly as she mended his fishing nets, her hands deft and precise. She brought him rare shells and trinkets from the sea, each one carrying a story. And despite her otherworldly origins, she embraced the simple joys of life with him—sunsets, laughter, and quiet moments by the fire.

But there was always a shadow in her eyes, a sadness she couldn’t hide.

One stormy night, everything changed. The ocean roared with fury, waves crashing violently against the shore. Leila stood by the window, her face pale.

"They’re coming for me," she whispered.

"Who’s coming?" I asked, but she didn’t answer.

Before I could stop her, she ran out into the storm. My father and I followed, struggling against the wind and rain. We found her at the edge of the water, surrounded by shadowy figures that seemed to rise from the sea itself.

"You can’t take her!" my father shouted, his voice breaking.

Leila turned to him, tears streaming down her face. "I have no choice," she said. "This is the price of freedom. But I’ll always love you."

And then she was gone, disappearing into the waves.

To this day, I don’t know if it was a dream or a glimpse into a world beyond my understanding. My father never spoke of her again, but every evening, he would sit by the shore, watching the horizon, as if waiting for her return.

As for me, I’ve come to believe that love knows no boundaries—not even those between land and sea. Leila taught me that. And sometimes, on quiet nights, I think I hear her song, carried by the wind, reminding me of the mermaid my father married.
