There's more (black book submission)

Today is a beautiful day, not because Tom didn’t mess up his coffee, but because today, he’s going to meet his soulmate. Altho, like any meeting with a soulmate, you never know it before it happens. And then it happened. Tom was there in his car, coffee in hand, sipping at the red lights, and driving slow because of the blue sky. It was a cold winter day. The ones that are very cold and bright, luminous in every corner of the streets. It’s one of those days where the snow crackles the same for everyone, no matter the shape and size. Today is the first moon of the year, and he always goes for a dip in the river.

Arriving on the bank, he takes a look around for fishing huts and follows the shore to the slimmest part of the ice covering the water. There, he cracks the ice and makes himself an opening to jump in. After his jump, he meditates for as long as his body will allow him to. After this, he enjoys a blunt and walks home only to pick up his car the next day. For the rest of that day, he would enjoy the sun and the sky and bathe at the Nordik. The Nordik is a spa located just outside the city in a part of the forest every local knows. At this spa, there is a sort of deprivation tank bath. It can accommodate more than a person, and the salinity level allows visitors to float with an eye mask, making it pretty incredible. Imagine floating in space, in your own body. Anyways, Tom loves it.

At night, the same day, he has friends over for champagne in the jacuzzi. He a Dj so the parties are always lit. Some come for the drugs, others for the girls, but most just come for the vibes of being together. But don’t forget the music and the dancing. Everyone’s there for the music and the dance. Let’s be real. So: Back in the car we have Tom going to the river and sipping black coffee at the red lights and all of the sudden, like in the movies, Tom stopped abruptly for a squirrel at the end of his street. Thank God.

Thinking about the incident he can’t help to think about the squirrel. Wondering if he had jumped in front of his car as a sort of initiation to the dangers of life. Encouraged by his parents and peer. I’m not even sure if squirrels have parents that stick around, but it must be like us whereas some do and some don’t. It’s like that sometimes, so ridiculous. And then Tom asked himself if the initiation was for the squirrel or for him. After all, if he hadn’t stopped, that squirrel might have been dead. Anyhow, the squirrel’s not dead, and so is he. That is for now. Some say that it’s just a question of time. But I think that time is a question for death as it doesn’t exist in the same way for everyone.

That is a notion that Tom was very familiar with. As a DJ his job was to organize time in the universal signal for dance until you die kind of way. To him, the most beautiful part of his show was when he could drop a part of a classical song that everyone knows that sounds so different from the bass and hats he loves so much. His meditation practice has also taught him to be patient with himself and with the world, that his anxiety wasn’t real, and simply needed to be tamed so that he could provide to others the environment he needed for himself.

The black book he wrote his set-list in had been lost for about a week and surely a long meditation practice could help him deal with it. In these books, he wrote his life in music. He always carried a little black book just in case he had time to work on his sets of songs. Until now everything seemed normal, he had bathed, meditated, but the weirdest thing happened. When he finally opened his eyes, Tom saw his lost black book in the distance. Just as if it had been placed right in front of him at about twenty yards. He couldn’t believe it, but at the same time, he was really calm and serene from the meditation. So he gathered his things, dressed up, and put his earphones on slowly beginning his journey towards the book.

When he picked it up, he immediately felt something had changed. And when he opened the book he found twenty thousand dollars next to a poem. And on the next page, instructions.

The instructions read :

Thank you for your work. We believe in it, and with this money we want you to travel further than before. Even further than music. We want you to fill in the gap between cultures, between languages by translating this poem. As you noticed, this poem is bilingual. Your task will be to study the meaning and meet linguists from around the world in order to universalize the language of ideas. Once all translations are completed, you will be able to achieve your goal of simultaneously publishing it across the world. Contact us when you are ready, only then will we answer. Good luck, you got a show tonight and places to go tomorrow!
