"The Garden of Healing"
There was a tiny, unobtrusive garden in the middle of an urban setting where the constant buzz of traffic seemed to never stop. It was easily overlooked if you were not looking for it because it was tucked away between two tall office buildings. But for those who discovered it, the garden turned into a haven where time seemed to stand still and the world slowed down.
For nearly ten years, Samantha had been employed in the city. Long hours, late-night meetings, and the excitement of moving up the corporate ladder were all part of the early years, which were full of ambition and enthusiasm. But the gleam faded with time. The relentless pressure to fulfill goals, the never-ending emails, and the back-to-back calls started to wear thin. Her breath became short, the weight of it all settled in her neck and shoulders, and her mind seemed to be spinning nonstop, unable to stop.
She noticed an inconspicuous sign that read, "City Garden - Open to All," one Thursday afternoon as she was racing from one meeting to the next. The sign almost seemed to have materialized out of thin air. She took a detour, leaving the pavement and entering the garden out of curiosity.
It was like entering a different universe the instant she walked in. The gentle rustle of leaves and the delicate scent of blossoming flowers took the place of the city's cacophony. Despite its diminutive size, the garden had been meticulously maintained in every way. The paths were bordered by flowers of all hues, and in the middle was a tiny pond with a glass-like surface. Overlooking a patch of wildflowers that were gently wafting in the breeze was a lone bench that was attractive despite its age.
Samantha closed her eyes and took a long breath while sitting on the bench. She felt herself relax for the first time in weeks. She felt lighter as though all of the tension that had accumulated inside of her had been absorbed by the garden.
She began going to the garden daily. It turned become a routine for her, a way to escape the chaos that ruled her professional life. She spent a few minutes each day sitting and allowing the peace wash over her while she listened to the birds chirping and watched the butterflies fly by. She discovered that taking a break from her busy schedule and giving herself time to think and breathe was what actually cured her, not just the physical surroundings.
She was reading a book on the same bench one day when an older man took a seat next to her. He was composed, had silver hair, and smiled warmly.
He broke the stillness by stating, "You know, I have been coming here for years."
Startled by the disruption but appreciative of the companionship, Samantha looked up. “Really? I have only recently begun to visit this place.
The man gave a nod. It is a little haven in the middle of the city. I believe that everyone needs a location like this to rest and rejuvenate. I have discovered that the more I visit, the more I can relate to myself. It is easy to forget how much we depend on nature, yet the city has a way of drawing us in.
They talked about their lives for a long time. He was a retired teacher named George who had lived in the city most of his life. Many years ago, when he was also overwhelmed by the fast-paced nature of the city, he had come across the garden. It has since evolved into a space for introspection and recovery for him.
That day, Samantha came away from the garden feeling more lucid. She had not even realized how empty a part of her was until the talks, the calm, and the connection to anything beyond the concrete jungle filled it.
She began to make minor adjustments to her life as the weeks went by. Throughout the day, she stopped more often to stroll around the garden. She started to put her health first and became more mindful of how she interacted with other people. She no longer believed that the only thing that mattered was the unrelenting drive for accomplishment that had before devoured her. She started to value balance in her personal and professional lives.
George returned to sit with Samantha in the garden one sunny spring morning. Her eyes were different this time, and she felt a calmness that she had never experienced before.
Samantha informed him, "What you said has been on my mind." "About getting in touch with ourselves. I believe I am beginning to grasp what that means at last. It is more important to appreciate where you are than to chase for something.
George grinned. "Like everyone else, you are learning in your own time."
Samantha took one last look at the garden as she got ready to go, appreciating the small haven it had become in her life. It had allowed her room to grow and, in addition to its beauty, it had healed her. In this small garden, she had discovered the tranquility and clarity that the city had so frequently obfuscated.
As she returned to the outside world, she was reminded of the restorative influence of nature and silence and realized that no matter how hectic life got, she would always have this moment to retreat to.
