I sat there on the back of the boat, wondering if the day was ever going to end. I was so tired of fishing, so tired of not catching anything and watching him reel one in after the other. I was fed up, and I wanted to leave. I begged to go home. “I’m annoyed and I just don’t want to be here anymore.” I sat pouting from the back sitting with my gear packed up. “We will leave but we have one spot to stop before we go home, okay?” J said to me with kind eyes. He could see I was frustrated.
Back at the boat ramp I grabbed my gear and sat in the truck waiting to leave. I was doing all the right things and I couldn’t catch a single fish, I fished where he was, used the same lures and still nothing. He climb in the truck leaned over and kissed me and said “Let’s go to range.” I rolled my eyes “WHY?!” I truly felt bad, I just wanted to go home. He was persistent and knew it was my favorite fishing spot, so we went. I’m glad we did, he always knew how to cheer me up
In the pitch black of a late October night I shuffled my way to the bridge, climbed over with my rod in hand and waited for him to catch up. His hips and knees had been bothering him more these days, walking anywhere was a process. “Go on and cast, I’m not fishing until you catch a fish.” He said looking at me with tired smile as he climbed over “WHY?” I asked. “Just fish, after you catch something I will fish with you!” He said as he leaned his rod up against the guard rail waiting for me to send out my first cast. I rolled my eyes and walked closer to the shore and casted out to the left; no luck. “I give up.” I say softly as I let out a heavy sigh. “Cast over there!” He says as he points to the shore line to our right. “WHY?” I said. This was becoming my question of the night. “Just do it.” I roll my eyes and cast where he pointed and started to reel my chatterbait back to shore. “Hold your rod tip up babe.” He states and motions to my fishing rod. “WHY?!” I shouted, annoyed I still hadn’t had any luck. Within a few seconds a giant splash erupted from the water and the sounds of my reel spinning filled the area. “That’s WHY!” He turns to me and smiles. The moonlight was shining just right on his perfect brown eyes, and watching them gleam with excitement helping me get in my fish in; a moment I will never forget.
I caught the biggest large mouth bass I have ever caught that night and still to this day I will never ask him “WHY?” ever again.
