The Coin

A Very Fictional Story, But The Message Is Real

There I was one fine day, rummaging through my drawer - not really in search of anything important, just desperately trying to find something to do. Guess what I found? A coin. Yes, you heard it right. A plain, old coin, the kind we used to flip to decide who gets the last piece of pizza. I figured, why not? I flipped it out of curiosity or boredom or simply to waste some time. Heads or tails? I was really not in a mood to decide that. The coin was only a coin after all.

But, oh, how wrong I was. That coin became my guide for life very soon. Yes, you heard that right. My guide for life. Who needs expensive therapy or tough decision-making skills when you have a trustworthy coin? Really, it was amazing. For every small choice I couldn't make, I would just flip that coin. Should I wear the blue shirt or the red one? Heads for blue, tails for red. Blue it is!

Then things got more serious, of course. Shopping? Flip a coin. Where to eat? Flip a coin. What movie to watch? Yes, flip a coin. No more worrying about choices. The coin decided everything for me. And it wasn't just me who thought it was smart people began saying nice things about my “taste.” “Nice shirt!” “Great choice for lunch!” “This is the best movie ever!” ” They had no idea I wasn’t using my own brain to decide. It was just heads or tails doing all the heavy lifting for me.

It was going so well that I almost thought this coin was my lucky charm. Maybe the universe just told me my life would be smooth from then on. Every decision I made was correct! I was invincible! Why do people have to doubt themselves or put effort into something when you can be right 50 percent of the time?

But as we all know, nothing lasts forever. One day, that coin was gone. Just like that. I looked everywhere-under the couch, behind the fridge, in all the random pockets of my jackets. I found nothing. I had no coin, no choices, and I felt a little scared. How would I choose anything now?

Suddenly, during my time of trouble, I realized something very important. That coin had made me its servant. All my choices, all my thoughts were taken over by that small piece of metal. It worked for a time until it didn't, but the biggest issue was, I did not know how to decide for myself anymore. That coin had done so much of the work for me that I forgot what it felt like to actually think things through.

Then it hit me: Luck? That's just a funny little story we tell ourselves to explain why things go our way. Luck doesn't control anything. You do. You make your own luck. Your decisions, your hard work, your confidence that's the real magic. The coin wasn't guiding me. It was just an excuse, something to lean on. What if it had made me begin to choose wrong? What if the luck ran out? What if the coin made me do something silly?

And that, my friends, was the moment when I realized that I needed to change. I didn't need that coin or anything else to decide for me. I was fully able to choose for myself. Actually, I should have been doing it from the beginning.

The thing is, this coin in this story? Not real. The message? Real. Sometimes we let others, things, or situations decide for us. It is easy to let others lead. However, really, we should be the ones in control. You know yourself better than anyone else. You do not need a coin-or anybody else-to tell you what to do. You make your own luck.
