The Black book

The little Black Book

By Brittney FinleyPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Beep! Beep! Went the horn of the car behind me as I sat in shock completely oblivious to the traffic that surrounded me, my life was changing right before my eyes. I could not believe what was happening to me, how did I become so lucky? Why me, what did I do to deserve this? Startled by the horn I proceeded to the nearest parking lot. So many questions filled my mind I was overwhelmed with excitement but riddled with guilt at the same time. It did not belong to me, I should have turned it in I thought to myself. I should have never opened it, I would have never been this tempted the thoughts became endless I finally pulled myself together after a brief moment of many emotions. Surely that black book belonged to someone, buzz! buzz! I starred down my watch as it vibrated, the time read 7:15am.

There was only five minutes left before my shift at work, I worked as a concierge for one of the finest hotels in the Las Vegas area. Just the night before I pulled an all nighter shift what I thought was a normal shift turned into a chaotic one. As the concierge, I went on about doing my duties tending to guest and the employee’s requests. But their was one particular guest request that threw me for a loop, it was a very odd one to say the least. Even down to how the request was delivered to me I was in my janitorial closet when a note slid underneath the door. In the midst of enjoying my lunch I picked the note up and it read “we have been watching you” I suddenly jumped up and snatched opened the door only to find a halfway lit hallway.

Firmly closing the door in fear, I rushed back over to the note and found that it had a backside that read “come to room 1905”. This has to be a joke, Rickey must be back to his old antics I thought. I decided to stop by the room later that night, as I made my way up to the room I became a little anxious. Click! sounded off the door as I slid the key card through the lock, slowly opening the door I entered the room. While putting my tool bag down I caught a quick glimpse of the room there on the bed laid a little black book. I hesitantly picked it up to find that it was missing a few pages.

Reaching for the note in my pocket I realized that I had one of the missing pages. Looking through the book every page seemed to be blank all but the last one that read “look under the bed”. I examined the room to make sure that it was not a prank as I began to lift the bed dust particles flew everywhere. There underneath the bed sat a black duffle bag, anxious to see the contents of the bag I impatiently started beating the dust off of it. “ Gus! YOUR ASSISTANCE IS NEEDED ON FLOOR FOUR!” sounded off my handheld transceiver. Be their momentarily I responded “ CODE RED, CODE RED we have sprung a leak” Rickey yelled.

Without hesitation, I grabbed both bags ditching the duffle bag in my janitors closet. The water leak took up my entire shift I spent majority of the time fixing broken pipes and sucking up water puddles. By the end of my shift guests were rehoused and floor four was deemed water damaged I was beyond exhausted . Surprised at the fact that I had even enough strength to make it back to my janitorial closet, I grabbed the duffle bag and clocked out. The whole car ride home I struggled to keep my eyes open all I wanted was a hot shower and my cozy bed. I pulled in my drive way and drug my exhausted body in the house barely making it to the couch.

The next morning, I woke up still in my uniform with only an hour until work. Feeling refreshed and energized I swiftly got ready, as I slid into the car I noticed the duffle bag in the passenger seat. I paused for a second and started thinking the worst what if it is a bomb? Now I was afraid to open it, I cautiously started unzipping the bag. It seemed like forever once I got the bag open thousands of dollars spewed from it a hundred grand in total. For the first time in my life I was stuck, I quickly started stuffing the money back in the bag in hopes that nobody saw me then I proceeded to back out of my drive way.
