Visibility- It's Free!
Today, March 31, is International Transgender Day of Visibility. For those who are unaware, someone who is transgender is a person who doesn't identify with the gender that was determined by their genitalia at birth. The term transgender also includes a few different subsections, with various, more specific, identities and labels. For starters, there are those who still consider themselves to be on the gender binary: female to male (FTM), or male to female (MTF) transgender. But, where one can still be on the binary, there are others who don't quite relate. Those who don't fit into this strict rule of binary- male or female- are non-binary. This label is inclusive of every other gender identity, such as genderfluid, genderqueer, bigender, agender/nongender, demiboy/demigirl, etc.

Queer Guide for the Straight Eye
When I was 15, my older sister and I would watch Jack & Bobby together while talking on the phone (I’m dating myself here -- there certainly wasn’t any Netflix Party in 2004!) and I had a small crush on Jack. In this particular episode, Lost Boys, Jack’s close friend Matt reveals he is in love with Jack. Ultimately, Matt commits suicide. I was closeted at the time, and my sister graciously reassured me I could tell her anything. Incredulous, I hung up the phone.

The argument I hear the most often when people encounter the use of, they or them as a singular pronoun is that it’s grammatically incorrect, and that those pronouns have always been meant as plural pronouns only.

Charlotte & Lucy
It was a gloomy, rainy day. “The perfect weather for the worst day of my life” Charlotte said. The cemetery was cold and quiet. I held Charlotte’s hand as we stood over the coffins. We were 14 years old and neither of us had ever lost someone. The drunk driver was 20 years old when he veered into oncoming traffic and smashed headfirst into the car. Kevin Stalward walked away with minor injuries and minimal jail time as a first time offender.

‘Table for one?’ The hostess smiles a bright toothy grin. ‘Uh, no, for two, I’m um, meeting someone’, I manage, the words sticking in my throat. We weave through the crowded bar, a stumbling man knocks into my shoulder, ‘Hey sexy, let me get you a drink’ he slurs. I nervously shake my head, and push the hair from my face to attempt an answer, though he’s already forgotten me and is swinging his arm over the shoulder of a waitress and making his way back to the bar.
