A Life Well Lived According to Emerson
Whenever I am looking for inspiration in my own life whether it comes to how to develop myself professionally or to be better on a personal level with others, I like to refer to the excellent quote on success and on a well-lived life by American essayist, philosopher, abolitionist, and 19th century transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson was not a man who saw success in only the material or popular means that is often the case of how individuals measure success today. Instead, Emerson believed success in life was about much more than fame, fortune, and overall popularity.

The Teacher
The Teacher I met Sally in a dance class in New York City. At first we seldom spoke to each other, I was so focused on getting my steps and the technique right at the eyes of this instructor who sat there shouting comments at us all and with so much reputation behind her, I wanted to get this one thing right. Sally was cute, full of sparkle, long mane of bright hair, so sunny Sally, blonde bordering on redhead. And she didn’t give a shit, but in a nice way, she was always laughing and giggling and she had a life of her own, unlike me, always struggling and warding off the eyes of prejudice. I never felt really welcome and a lot of these dancers were just so rude.

The Raging Bull
There is a raging bull inside of me and it's not because i had an awful childhood, wasn't traumatically bullied, but it's because i grew up poor. A second class citizen of the rich, not because of my skin colour, though that might too have something to do with it, but because of my parent's financial 'non-status'. I have white friends equally as poor, equally as discriminated against and equally as angry. It's not because of our skin colour's that we rage inside, but it's because we were treated unfairly, not by our teachers, not by our parents, not even by our peers but by SOCIETY AT LARGE.

Courage
Courage; where does yours come from? Courage isn't the opposite of fear; it is the opposite of complacency. Complacency is the bastard child of certainty and convenience. When those two get together, they sap our curiosity, commitment, collaboration and destroys our courage by convincing us to continue clamoring confidently along. When we believe we are correct, we don't need to be courageous – just stubborn. When convenience removes all challenges or, worse, convinces us to avoid circumstances that cause inconvenience, we get stuck more profound in the muck of mediocrity (complacency's cousin).
