friendship
C.S Lewis got it right: friendship is born when one person says to another: "What! You too? I thought I was the only one!"
What I Learned From Dyeing My Hair Blue
In July of 2016, I went from brunette to having blue, green, and purple “mermaid hair.” I’d wanted to dye it for a while, but had never followed through on it before. Before I did it, many of the adults around me (that weren’t my friends) kept telling me how much I’d regret it and how drastically it would negatively impact my life. I was told that I’d never get respect, that it’d ruin my hair, that I’d miss my old color too much, that it’s only something delinquent teenagers do, and even that having dyed hair would make me want to “fit in to that crowd,” somehow causing me to do things like drugs and other illegal activities. They were all certain that simply changing my hair color would somehow change who I was.

Her Last Day
I loved her. I still do. With everything I've got. Ever since that cloudy day four years ago when we met in the park. Ever since I realized she was the one I was looking for my whole life and after she shared her heart and her entire life with me. Ever since I moved into her place a week after we accidentally jogged into each other.

What We Need to Hear
Are you a friend or family member of someone with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder or PMDD? When a loved one is living with PMDD, the sad truth is that you’re living with it too. Our condition is a serious challenge for our relationships, and admittedly, we’re not always easy to love.

Give Yourself the Chance of Being Alone
Some people can't handle loneliness and other people were meant to be alone. I am part of the second group of people. Don’t take me wrong, I have friends and I sincerely appreciate them, but I like to be lonely. Loneliness is not the bad guy as we were taught, it can actually help us to understand aspects of the problems we have and the struggles we face throughout our lives.

Signs Your Friends Are Too Judgmental
There are few things worse than feeling shame or judgment. Being judged makes us feel uncomfortable, wrong, and desperate for acceptance. It's just a bad vibe that makes us question ourselves - even if we're usually very calm and confident.

On Love and Tacos
When I began eating a vegetarian diet in 2001, my live-in boyfriend at the time did not. We had both come upon information about how much healthier it was to substitute vegetable proteins for meat, the cruelty involved in raising and butchering animals for food, and the environmental impact of our taste for animal flesh. But while I was moved to act, he was content to not change, saying “I just like to eat meat too much to stop”. I found it a huge turn-off, and this was one of a few reasons why he became an ex-boyfriend. To me, it was another example of how rigid he was, his inability to personally evolve.

That Old Familiar Rain
In the wee hours of twilight the rhythm of the falling rain moves with a tempo whose melody is unmistakably somber in tone. The pitter patter beats a painful reminder of those yesteryears where bittersweet moments still linger in conscious thought. The gaiety of life was often subdued by tears of sorrow and woe. As I recall it was the tumultuous relationship with my parents that set me adrift in the sea of missed opportunity. Those were the days of struggle amidst hope. The decisions I made though affected more than just me. And, yet I keep paying a price for every day I threw away.

Asking and Explaining
We know that infidelity often results in breakups, divorces and social stigmatization. Western society has frowned upon straying from one’s intimate partner, from the widespread reproach of public figures such as former president Bill Clinton, presidential hopeful John Edwards, actress Kristen Stewart, and professional golfer Tiger Woods, among others. Indeed, partner’s betrayal makes for great emotional upset, perpetuating verbal and even physical abuse. What exactly drives people to cheat? It’s worth examining the literature on people’s reactions and ways of addressing infidelity across genders, social status, and age. Further, cheating may be motivated by fulfillment of needs, the desire for self-growth, and different personality types.

I've Stopped Trying to Forget
I left the house at dusk and watched the bugs hover in the thick mist, illuminated like stars. Sam met me where my dad's bike was chained to a stop sign near the edge of the woods and we walked hand in hand on the old trail. An evening breeze picked its way through tahe overgrown weeds and tossed wet, summer leaves over our muddy feet and between our bodies that brushed against each other as we avoided fallen trees and dark puddles.
