A Tale of Two Father FIgures
“All I wanted was to be loved for myself.” That is a quote from The Phantom of the Opera, and it’s something that every human being wants. We want to believe that our society is a caring, accepting place, and it is for some of us, namely those whose true self aligns with social norms. But what about the rest of us, the Phantoms of this world who look, think, or act in a way that defies convention?

Emotionally Distant. Morally Questionable.
The son of Portuguese Brazillian immigrants, my dad grew up during the depression, and after dropping out of school in the sixth grade, this dirt poor little boy grew to be a slightly less than dirt poor man. What does a sixth-grade dropout do with his life? He finds work at the various mills that used to soil the skies of Fall River and New Bedford, Massachusetts, back in the 1930s.

First at 35
In mid-April of 1985, my grandmother, still nauseous from the terror-inducing 40-minute drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, watched as her eldest daughter was about to lie to the father of her child. The lie, born in fear and love, did not come easy, yet in the moment, it was her truth. What she needed. What she thought I needed.

From superhero to dad
There is a brief period in the average child's life where your dad appears to be a perfect being. They can do everything that you can't. They're indestructible and make absolutely no mistakes, unlike yourself who still struggles to go doodoo in the toilet at this age.

Had Father been the Dearest
I often wonder if fathers really know how important they are in their children's eyes. Society tends to portray them as second-class parents who just exist after the mother. Nobody really appreciates the anticipation of a father-to-be. Maybe because they don't carry the child for nine months, nor do they nurture it, nor feel it grow inside their body, nor do they nurse it. But fathers are always anxiously, nervously, anticipating the arrival of their child. Counting each day, hour, millisecond. It is this anticipation that is often overlooked, because their bodies don't pay the price for birthing a child.

Dad, AKA 'the man'
I remember being stood by the toilets, waiting for my uncle to come out of the toilets and they were next to this really big rollercoaster that I didn’t want to go on, but my dad had said ‘come on, don’t be a wuss, come on with me it’ll be fun!’ This made me not want to go on even more. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed being angry at my dad, or to wanted to contradict him, but it allowed me to side with mum as she would often say ‘he said no, don’t force him if he doesn’t want to’ which pleased me that I got my own way.

Toasties
The shovel digs into the dirt and the knife slices through bread. Seeds are scattered politely as the butter is spread carelessly. Next, the cheese, the smelly kind, her father’s favourite. Glancing through the window into the green she watches as her father lays down the topsoil, she places the top layer onto his well-earned snack. Twisting the knob to high she places the sandwich into the oven staring at it for a moment, eager for the cheese to melt.

Chasing Shea
We were floating together in the pool. You both had just gotten married and we were surrounded by people who loved your love the most. You held hands, smiling in pure ecstasy, as the sun set on you, and povi sang your tune; you took deep breaths into your next chapter.
