O'Connell Bridge - Pt. 19
It was pouring rain when LC left the ER Saturday morning. He made a mad dash to his truck, clicking open the door as he ran. “The foggy mess on the windows would make a good writer’s metaphor for my life right now,“ he said to the morning air. He waited till the rain soaked foggy windows cleared on his truck before moving.

The text read: “There’s one more thing for you to do. Please report to Wilmington Health for a physical. Your appointment is for 8:30 AM, June 22. You are off duty that day. Ask for Doctor Zorman. You will sign a release sending your information to O’Neil Milling Corporation; the doctor’s office has the proper address and fax information.”

LC sat in a lawn chair and dozed. He had a scheduled Saturday off. A privilege he got once a quarter. He had polished and cleaned his old truck and now he was sitting on the street in the town of Burgaw at a car show. He had all the statistics on his rebuild, printed courtesy of a clerk at the ER who copied all of his one page descriptions as an exchange for him changing the tire on her car early one morning.

The first of June, LC spent the day running errands, paying bills, and generally doing what needed to be done. At 2 PM, he received a parcel from the Gentleman’s Corner clothing store. It contained a blue sports jacket, tan pants, a white knit shirt, underwear, a belt, and shoes. A note was placed in the package. “Traveling clothes.”

“Well, Betty Jo said she’s getting a one bedroom in Leland in the fall, and like I don’t have a roommate yet; but she’s going to sublet my room here to her cousin this summer. I said that was okay even though it’s my name on the lease. it’s not really a sublet, her cousin is just visiting and paying her a share of the rent to stay. I told her I was going to Boston anyway, and wouldn’t be back till late August.” Caitlin complained to LC while he was going up the stairs. “If my aunt finds out I only have terminal papers for classes in the fall and don’t really have to be here, I might not be living in the apartment at all, just stuck in Boston doing her bidding.”

“I guess I need two weeks off starting June 25.” LC sat in the Human Resources office at New Hanover Medical Center. “I’ve been sending apps for grad school but haven’t had an acceptance yet. So, I suppose when I come back from my trip, I will be available to reassume my duties at the ER—North.”
