Solange Knowles Opens Up About 'Debilitating' Health Diagnoses 'I Feel Really Grateful'

Solange Knowles is sharing an update on her health.

The singer, 38, this week revealed she'd received multiple diagnoses in 2018 as she commented on an Instagram post from her fellow musician Shaun Ross, 33, in which he spoke candidly about his journey with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) as a result of long COVID.

Per the Mayo Clinic, POTS "affects the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary body functions such as heart rate and blood pressure."

In the comments section of the Oct. 14 post, Knowles said she'd also been diagnosed with the medical condition, as well as Sjogren's and Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS).

Sjogren's syndrome "is a disorder of your immune system identified by its two most common symptoms — dry eyes and a dry mouth," according to the Mayo Clinic, while the National Institutes of Health claims that with MCAS, "mast cells mistakenly release too many chemical agents, resulting in symptoms in the skin, gastrointestinal tract, heart, respiratory, and neurologic systems."

"I got diagnosed with POTS, Sjogrens and Mcas in 2018 and really relate to not wanting your health to be your identity," she added.

In her message, Knowles gave a shoutout to Dysautonomia International, a non-profit that, according to its website, "seeks to improve the lives of individuals living with autonomic nervous system disorders through research, physician education, public awareness and patient empowerment programs."

"The good folks at @dysautonomiaintl were really an incredible resource for me and I feel really grateful for the spoonie community for holding me down during my times of complete uncertainty! Sending an abundance of love your way !" Knowles concluded.

Ross replied, "Thank you so much Solange. You’ve known me since I was a teen and how energetic I can be. This definitely changed my entire outlook on so much try to navigate this entirely. I appreciate you so much. Sending love ❤️."

Knowles hasn't spoken much about her health journey in the past, but did reveal in December 2017 that she'd have to cancel her New Year's Eve performance at Afropunk Fest in South Africa due to an autonomic disorder she had been “quietly treating” for the past five months.

The musician wrote in a since-deleted post, "[It’s] been a journey that hasn’t been easy on me… Sometimes I feel cool, and other times not so cool at all.”

She explained at the time that her diagnosis was “complicated” and that she was “still learning so much myself," without revealing what type of autonomic disorder she'd been diagnosed with.

In November 2017, Knowles also canceled her performance at Florida State University's Homecoming concert due to "a medical condition," a statement shared by WTXL confirmed at the time.
