Flying High
The hum of the engines was soothing to Olivia. She was on her way to San Francisco, her hometown. The plane was full, and she had managed to snag a window seat. She loved looking down at the world from high above. Everything looked so small, yet so alive.
She settled into her seat, ready for the six-hour flight. As she gazed out the window, she felt a tap on her shoulder.
"Excuse me, ma'am. Would you like something to drink?" The flight attendant smiled at her.
Olivia nodded and ordered a glass of red wine. The flight attendant handed her a small bottle of water too.
As she sipped her wine, Olivia noticed the person sitting next to her. It was a man in his mid-thirties. He looked tired, with bags under his eyes. He had a book in his hand, but he wasn't reading it. He was staring at the pages, lost in thought.
Olivia wondered what was troubling him. She decided to strike up a conversation.
"Excuse me, I couldn't help but notice you seem upset. Is everything okay?" Olivia asked.
The man looked up, surprised. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to look that way. I'm just a little nervous. I'm flying to San Francisco to meet my girlfriend's family for the first time. I'm worried about making a good impression."
Olivia smiled. "I'm sure you'll do just fine. Just be yourself. And don't forget to breathe." She chuckled.
The man laughed too, and Olivia felt a connection. They chatted for a while, exchanging stories and laughter. Olivia found out that his name was Tom, and he was a software engineer. He was smart and funny, and Olivia enjoyed talking to him.
As the flight continued, Olivia felt herself relaxing. She had been under a lot of stress lately, and this trip was just what she needed. She had been living in New York City for the past five years, and she missed her family and friends back in San Francisco. She was looking forward to spending time with them.
She thought about her job, too. She was a writer, and she had been struggling to come up with ideas for her next book. She hoped that this trip would inspire her, give her the fresh perspective she needed.
The plane hit turbulence, and Olivia gripped the armrests. She hated turbulence, but she knew it was a normal part of flying.
Tom noticed her distress and reached out to her. "Don't worry. We're safe. The pilots know what they're doing."
Olivia looked at him, grateful for his reassurance. She smiled at him and relaxed a little.
The rest of the flight passed quickly. Olivia and Tom talked about everything and nothing. They shared their dreams and fears, their hopes and regrets. Olivia felt like she had known him forever.
As the plane descended into San Francisco, Olivia felt a pang of sadness. She didn't want the flight to end. She didn't want to say goodbye to Tom.
But she knew that this was just a temporary parting. She would always remember this flight, this conversation, this connection.
She smiled at Tom as they landed. "Thank you for keeping me company. I hope your visit with your girlfriend's family goes well."
Tom smiled back. "Thanks to you, I'm feeling much better. Maybe we'll run into each other again someday."
Olivia nodded, hoping it would be true. She gathered her things and walked off the plane, feeling lighter than she had in a long time. She knew that this flight had changed her in some small way, and she was grateful for it.
