Movie Story Review

Mehta's trusted writer Rishabh Sharma is adapting and revising the script of the Malayalam film Driving License by Lal Jr, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, for Akshay Kumar's Hindi remake. OK, this may sound crazy, but hear me out. The movie's comic relief also comes from Akki making self-deprecating jokes, why didn't he step in? When you can talk about your "Masood" ruining your smile, joke about your commitment to doing hundreds of thousands of projects every year, and have a doctor critique your "huge" script, then why did you limit the story to only sources available? in advance?

Why can't this be the story of a man who somehow forgets to renew his passport and fails with extreme difficulty to renew it due to his dual nationality (maybe be India and Canada?) Keeping the soul of the story of a public war between a superstar and his hardcore fan, why not completely rethink the project? I know it's easy to write and hard to execute, but isn't it like remaking an already-loved movie?

Anurag Kashyap's partner, Rajeev Ravi remains fairly basic when it comes to cinematography. Other than a few routine action sequences, there's nothing to brag about in the way the film looks. Ritesh Soni's editing doesn't help matters, leaving the second half to languish in oblivion.

Actor's Performance Review

Akshay Kumar's obsession with his lucky number 9 continues as his character Vijay drives a car with numbers like 4545 or 0909, and even his driver's license form lists his address as '27' Pali Hill Is For the most part, due to the film's self-deprecating humor, it feels like Akshay is breaking the fourth wall to speak to the audience. It's something Akshay can do while sleepwalking, the performance doesn't propel the endless story. He really gives his best while delivering hilarious lines, but unfortunately, that's not enough.

Emraan Hashmi's Om star worship isn't exactly well built to develop a relationship based solely on your performance. It would be very difficult for non-fans to fully understand what he is going through. Is Om's transformation from die-hard fan to failed father to vengeful RTO inspector "recovering already?"

Nushrat Bharucha and Diana Penty, as the respective housewives of Emraan and Akshay, have nothing to do in the film except screw up their husbands. Incredibly fit and gorgeous 53-year-old Mahesh Thakur barely shoots a movie and it will forever amaze me, how do you catch someone so talented without cracking a few soulful jokes? Abhimanyu Singh's characterization is hilarious, leads to heartwarming scenes, and saves the best for last. The "Corporator" played by Meghna Malik relies heavily on his natural acting to bring out the best in the character. Kusha Kapila is here again.

Music in the Movie

Raj Mehta must stick to the original scripts for his talent to flourish. You definitely see parts of him in the comedic parts of the movie, but that's about it, it's a very generic attempt at something else. I'll decode the line above for you, Mehta fails to handle the "masala" parts of Vijay Kumar but impresses in the heartbreaking scenes of superstar Sooraj (played by Abhimanyu Singh).

The likes of Tanishk Bagchi, Yo Yo Honey Singh, The Professor, Lijo George, DJ Chetas, Vikram Montrose, Aditya Yadav, Tarun and Anu Malik (for the Main Khiladi remake Tu Anari) have rallied for the song, but no failed to deliver a single track Failing that, it could be on my playlist for up to a week. The vibe of PropheC is ruined by making it a 'hook line ki khatir' song (when you listen to the original the song starts with the hook line leading to the initial climax which the movie version fails to reach).

Rating

I would rate this movie 2 out of 5-star ratings.
