It's Just What We Do!

Scissors, It’s In my DNA.

A few weeks ago I gathered up all the scissors in the house, I counted 38 scissors in various states of disrepair. I was trying to decide if I need to buy just one more pair. Of course, the answer is always “YES!” There were only 3 good scissors in this house, and of course one of the good ones is my sewing shears. These shears are also the ones I keep hidden from hands that just don’t understand: just one time of cutting the wrong thing will ruin them FOREVER! If only I could keep my shears hidden from myself.

I have had scissors in my hand all day long for this, that, or another, that is okay with me because it is in my DNA. My Granddad was a tailor in San Antonio, TX, he made suits for LBJ and my mom was an excellent seamstress, she made many costumes for Jones Hall Houston TX. I have made a wedding dress. I started sewing at the age of about 8-years-old but then the pillowcase looked like an 8-year-old made it. Somehow in the morning, it looked much better. Thanks, mom!

I start each day by grabbing my garden shears, good for almost everything from pruning limbs to snipping away some overgrown leaves.

In my house the open, old sewing machine is always ready, no need to put it away right now, I will need to work on mending ASAP. I have two pants and a nightgown, that needs my scissors' attention right away and countless more waiting in a bag nearby. Whether it is my scissors or shears or thread snips they must be at hand.

Then preparing for the kids' craft time, we will be cutting 100 stars from glow-in-the-dark foam board to be taped to the ceiling. We do not need a night light anymore. In this house, we are always doing crafts for everyone.

The kids just got home, they are waiting to be called into the restroom to get their hair cut.

I almost forgot to eat! Food prep time, I really do not know why I have my kitchen scissors in the bread box except they are always easy to find. First, cut open a bag of flour, the tortillas are done. Now to cut up the chicken for the BBQ pit, these all-purpose scissors go through meat & bone, and into the dishwasher, they all go.

I sigh with a smile as my youngest grabs a pair of scissors to cut the day-old pizza, I taught my kids' well, no knives needed.

Whether it is for gardening, school, home, work, crafting, or cooking, it's all in a day's work.

If I only had $1 for every time I said “do not touch my good scissors.”

Then my kid respond “but can I touch your evil scissors.”
