Serendipity: the effect by which one accidentally stumbles upon something truly wonderful especially while looking for something entirely unrelated.

Ding Dong

“Somebody get the door,” Sarah shouted from her room.

“Ooooh it may be my delivery,” her sister Sam responded as she opened the door.

“Oh. It’s for you.”

“I didn’t order anything,” Sarah responded.

“Oh great, can I have it then? Actually no it may be from an admirer of yours and I do not want anything from them. I will not be locked down, I will be as free as a bird.”

Sarah stared at her little sister blankly as she yanked the box out of her hands and went up to her room mumbling “dreamer” under her breath.

Sarah’s Mom came out of her room and saw the box.

“Stop ordering things! We are in a pandemic and money is tight!”

I didn’t order this Mom, someone sent it.

Oooohhh who’s it from?

“Bye Mom,” Sarah closed her room door behind her.

“Ugh this pandemic has got me going crazy, having to live with everyone under one roof again, arghhh.”

“Now let’s see what this is.” As Sarah began to open the box there was an odd feeling in her gut, it was as if the box has some sort of foreign energy to it. As she ripped off the tape she could have sworn she saw a light shoot out of the box.

“Damn, I have to stop falling asleep with my contacts, better book an eye doctor appointment.” She unwrapped what was inside the box and she found a little black book with an elastic closure super sleek with rounded corners.

Sarah opened the book to find beautifully thick ivory blank pages.

“Hmmm...a journal? Who would send me a journal? I get it, they are sending me a message. I need to get organized and figure out what the hell to do with my life. How rude, how dare they! Wait, I need to calm down — maybe they are just trying to help me find my path or my passion... I mean, it is a really nice looking journal. Ok fine.” She picked up a pen and turned to the first page, as soon as she put the pen to the paper a sentence started writing itself.

“AHHHHH, what the...” She jumped up, and the book went flying into the air. “Ok there is definitely something wrong with my eyes. I am tripping; it’s all this isolation, not seeing people, not touching people — I have gone mad! It has finally happened; I have gone mad” She picked up the book again and opened to the first page again. It was blank. She took the pen again and put it to the page. The page started writing again, this time Sarah couldn’t take her eyes off the book.

Hey Sarah, you have been chosen, it doesn’t matter by who or what, all that matters is that you understand that you have something extremely special that you possess. You have the power to seek your passion and the power to change lives. Anything you write in this book comes true, but use it wisely.

“Ok I have clearly gone crazy because of the pandemic, but let’s test this theory. There’s no way this is real. Maybe this is some sort of a prank; oh wait this is one of those paper tablet smart notebooks. Maybe this is a prototype that they want people to try out.” Sarah starts analyzing the book, and she tears out a page. “I don’t get it; this is just a normal piece of paper. Ok I am straight tripping. I need to take a cold shower to wake up”. Sarah throws the loose paper on her desk and heads to the shower.

Her sister then knocks on her door and enters her room when there is no answer.

“Let’s see what she got in her delivery.” She spots the journal on her desk and then she spots the piece of paper that was torn out.

“Ooooh bougie paper.” She picks up the pen and starts to write a note: Hey sis, since you got a free journal, from who knows where and refused to give it to me, you can give me a gift of $20000 to make up for it, ok bye.” Her sister started giggling as she left the note on her desk and ran out of the room.

Sarah entered her room in a towel and began to look for her slippers. She reached under her bed and felt something odd; she didn’t remember putting a stack of small papers under her bed, she grabbed it and pulled it out.

“OH MY GOSH!”

“Oh Sarah, did you see what I put in your room?” Her sister called from outside the door.

“OH MY GOSH, I knew my sister was into some things I didn’t know about but a stack of cash and under my bed, she is definitely trying to frame me!” She then spotted the note on her desk and read it.

“No way, no way, no way. This is a prank, I’m gonna prove it. Ok, what is something ridiculous to ask for? Think, think. Something a celebrity would request, hmmm. I GOT IT.” Sarah opens the book and begins to write a request.

“Ok there, now this will prove that I am not crazy. See nothing is happening.” As soon as Sarah placed the pen down on the notebook, it began to rain yellow peanut M&M’s. It worked.

“WHAT THE F…..”

Ding Dong

“I’ll get it,” Sarah yells. She runs downstairs and frantically opens the door, hoping she will get some sort of answer for the bizarre day she has been having.

She saw that it was another delivery with her sister, Sam’s, name on it.

“Hey, hey, hey, that one is mine! I got a delivery notification; I ordered a mic stand! Hands off!”

“But you don’t have a mic?” Sarah asked.

“I ordered the stand because that is what I can afford right now.”

Sarah ran back to her room and sat at her desk. She felt the book calling out to her; she didn’t have any answers, so she began to write. I have been given this immense amount of power and influence that anything I write down in this book comes true. But why me? I don’t even know my path and this pandemic sure did not help that. I guess I do have ideas. I guess I have let fear hold back my passions. But I am not special, what do I have to offer?

Sarah felt tears start to form in her eyes, so she put the pen down to wipe them away. The book began to write back.

Sarah, we are all part of an intricate system that is not yet fully understood; most people would look at this book and see separate pages, but we all have the capability in us to look at these pages and see more than that. We can see the trees that they came from. And from the trees comes our source of oxygen to live, to breath and from that oxygen we were created. If we are able to see all of us as an incredibly special and intricate part of this system we would never question our capabilities and whether we are special or not. This book came to you because why not you? Why not anyone on this planet? What is it that you want most if you conquer your fear?

“Damn this book is deep. I feel if it had a voice it would be Mufasa’s from the Lion King or wait Beyonce’s voice, ya Bey’s voice.”

She reached into the expandable inner pocket of the Little Black Book, there contained a worn out small paper with a sentence: your responsibility is to explore your infinite creativity and use it to contribute to the world.

This is it. Sarah realized that she wanted to create a community to help others explore their passion — their light — just like how the book opened her eyes to start exploring hers.

Her sister walks into her room. Sarah hands her a stack of money, “Here, go buy that microphone you have been talking about.” Her sister stood there in shock not knowing what to say. Sarah smiled with confidence and said, “We have a great deal of work to do with the rest of the $20 000.”

Sarah found out that she had what it took the whole time; she didn’t actually need the magic journal; although, it sure did help with a few things. What the book truly did was let her see that the true magic was inside her the entire time — her passion to help others explore their creativity; how serendipitous.
