The Bracelet of Love

By Kelly BrackettPublished 5 years ago 9 min read

“So, all you have to do is wear the bracelet until the day we activate it. When we do activate it, you will automatically be pulled to your soulmate.” The man stated as he attached the blinking red bracelet to my wrist. “It’s magnetic, so it will attach to their bracelet when it is activated. To separate them, they will press the button on yours and you will press the one on theirs.”

That had been what they told me three months ago. Today is the day the bracelet is supposed to be activated, but nothing has happened yet. I took the day off work because I did not know where I would end up when it did activate. It was experimental technology that is supposed to help single people match with someone, and I had my doubts that it would be effective, but I was lonely. I wanted the companionship of a lover and had not had any luck in that department on my own. All of a sudden, a beeping sound bounced around the room from the direction of my wrist.

I stared in shock as the bracelet lifted my arm up before my body was pulled gently forward. Standing, I walked in the direction the bracelet was pulling me in, out of the door to my one-bedroom apartment, down the stairs and out into the street. There were people all around me that were in the same situation, their wrists pulling them forward, and some people had their bracelets meet right there in the street. Mine kept pulling me forward until I began to tire from all of the walking. Where is this stupid thing leading me?

The company that made them stated that the way the bracelets worked was a secret, but that they were harmless to the human body. I recognized where I was immediately, as it was a hospital I had gone to often for business. Is my supposed soulmate someone that is sick here? I really hope not, because to finally meet them, then find out they had a terminal illness? That just seems unfair. The bracelet pulled me through the doors to a stairwell in the very furthest part of the building. More walking? I was getting tired of it.

It led me up the stairs by aiming my wrist straight up. Now, not only were my legs tired, my arm was getting there too. Perhaps they should have made these out of necklaces instead! Jeez, I planned to contact the company as soon as this was over and give them a piece of my mind. I could hear footsteps coming down the stairs, but I ignored that in favor of trying to lower my arm. I knew what way to go, so could I at least relax my arm and continue up the stairs like a normal person? Right at the landing of that set, I ran directly into the person that was coming down.

My arm finally lowered and I heard the bracelet beep five times before it locked with that person’s bracelet. Finally, I thought, my eyes following the defined arm of the person I was connected to. I looked up over the white coat of the person, the tag on their chest naming them Doctor Aaron Abernathy, up into the deepest of blue eyes. His gaze was on me too, wonder and shock coloring his features. I had seen him before, several times in fact, on television, but had never considered the possibility that he was my soulmate.

“Hello…” I whispered passed the lump in my throat. “My name is Lizzy.”

He still had his stethoscope in the hand that did not have the bracelet on it. The doctor towered over me too, at least standing at six foot four. I was waiting for him to speak when the hand with the bracelet on its wrist grabbed my forearm. Raising my eyebrows, I felt like I was being sucked into his beautiful eyes, and to be honest, I did not mind it one bit. I bit my lip and noticed it drew his gaze to my mouth, causing my heart to pound hard in my chest. Was this doctor not known for being ice cold to people? Why was it he could look at me with such heat then?

“Doctor Aaron Abernathy. It’s my pleasure to meet you.” He said, his gaze locked on my lips. “I’m surprised the device actually worked as they claimed it would.”

“I’m just as surprised as you are, Doctor.” I replied, inadvertently dropping my own gaze to his mouth. “I had my doubts, as it is just experimental technology, but I can clearly see the difference between this connection and dating someone random.”

“Hm. Me too. And please, call me Aaron. Would you like to go to the cafeteria for coffee with me?” Aaron asked, his hand feeling hot on my forearm. “I still have some patients to attend to today, but I’m free right now, and after if you would like to talk more.”

“I would love that.”

And so, we walked back down the stairs to the cafeteria where we ordered coffee and something small to eat. He was indeed handsome, and though the bracelets were bothersome to walk with, he did not want to press the button to disconnect them. I was not even considering it, as I enjoyed the feel of his skin on mine. I blushed as he continued to watch me, his fingertips running along my forearm lightly. I shivered from the contact, watching as a smirk lifted the corner of his lip. Oh, be still my heart, he has the most gorgeous set of dimples in his cheeks I have ever seen!

“So, what do you do for a living, Lizzy?” Even the way he said my name sounded so sweet. “Because I feel like I may have seen you before.”

“I work as a virtual Administrative Assistant.” I replied, tilting my head as I looked up at him from my seat across from him. “But occasionally, I come here because of my mother. She’s sickly, so she’s in and out of the hospital a lot. Maybe you saw me then?”

“Yes, maybe that’s it. Either way, I’m happy we met like this.” Aaron returned; his blue eyes focused on me. “After work today, would you like to get dinner with me?”

“I think I can entertain you this evening.” I countered with a smirk, causing his eyes to narrow as he smiled. “Seeing as I took the entire day off work for this bracelet.”

“I’m glad to hear it.” I felt his free hand wrap around my wrist. “Unfortunately, I have to get back to work, as a doctor is always busy, but I am looking forward to this evening.”

I am too, especially since I could feel the sparks flying between us. The bracelets disconnected and I smiled up at him as my own fingers held his wrist too. I could tell he noticed it too, so we parted ways with an exchanging of phone numbers and a promise for a date that evening. I went home to change, wanting to wear something that would wow him. Since it was dinner, I selected a nice black cocktail dress that I knew complimented my features. After lightly dusting some make up on, I left my apartment again for the restaurant we were to meet at.

I did not want to overdress for my date with the beautiful Lizzy, but I could not help myself. Of course, the place we were going for our first date had a bit of a dress code, but I wanted to look good too. I was a doctor, so that meant long hours with small amounts of sleep, but that did not mean I had to look tired, either. The minute I arrived at the restaurant and set eyes on her; I froze. She was standing there in a black cocktail dress looking absolutely dazzling.

Wanting to admire her for a second longer, I made use of the fact she had not noticed me yet. Around her wrist was the bracelet that led to our meeting today and on her neck was a simple but elegant necklace that brought the entire ensemble together. It was clear that people found her to be extremely beautiful with her gorgeous blue eyes and soft looking brown hair. Just about everyone that passed her was looking at her, but her attention was on her phone, as she waited for me. I walked forward with a smile, excited that the bracelet had worked.

“Waiting for someone, Beautiful?” I asked watching as she looked up from her phone. “Because your date is a lucky man.”

“Ah, Aaron! I have to say I’m the lucky woman.” She replied as a stunning smile brightened her features and she put her phone in her clutch. “You make quite the handsome date, after all.”

Though she blushed as she said it, she managed to get the words out. I offered her my arm and led the way into the restaurant, hoping to enjoy my evening in the company of this beautiful woman. I still remembered a few months ago, the whole reason I got the bracelet. I had been looking for Missus Right, but was too busy to really search as my mind was on my patients. I thought that if this bracelet could do it for me, why not give it a shot? And now, the woman on my arm has my full attention. It was like the bracelet could detect chemicals in the body and based its connection off of that.

As we made our way through the restaurant to a booth seat, I smiled slightly. I had never hit it off with a woman so quickly before. Helping her into her seat, I took my spot across from her and smiled. I noticed the way she shifted, before turning her gaze down to the menu. There was a lot I could tell about her just from her body language. She was nervous, but excited to explore this new thing. I smiled thinking that this was only the beginning of a long and beautiful relationship. All I needed to do was make her happy.

It had been five years since that first date. I smiled as my mind drifted back to that time and closed my diary from when I first started dating him. It was all thanks to that bracelet. Since the first line of them were extremely successful, the company went on to make necklaces to replace the bracelets as I was not the only one with a complaint about a sore arm. I looked down at the engagement ring on my finger and knew that on my lips was a beaming smile. Aaron often said that I wore that smile anytime I looked at the ring, but I could not help myself.

“Are you ready?” It was my dad standing there, looking handsome in his tux. “My, I don’t want to give you to him.”

“Dad, come on.” I started, standing from my seat, a smile still holding up the corners of my lips. “It’s supposed to be the day you finally get rid of me. You should be happy.”

“No, you’re always going to be my baby girl.” Dad said stepping forward to offer me his arm. “But I suppose he has earned your love. I guess I can give you to him if he makes you smile like that.”

I watched as my dad lifted his hand to his face and wiped away a tear that had broke free. It was a beautiful moment shared between my father and I, that made me feel emotional as well. We walked out of the changing room into the hall and down to the doors to the chapel where the ceremony was to be held. I felt nervous, excited, happy, and sad all at the same time as the doors slowly opened to reveal my husband-to-be, looking sharp in his black tuxedo. His gaze landed on me and I practically floated down the aisle to him.

“Make her happy, Aaron.” My dad whispered, leaving me to him and going to take his seat.

“You look stunning, my beautiful bride.” Aaron whispered to me after nodding to my father. “I love you so much, Liz.”
