One Girl

Poetry

By H. Leigh HamiltonPublished 4 years ago 6 min read

One girl,

Stands alone,

Facing a world,

That does not notice her at all,

She was one,

And, then she was many,

The phoenix of her hope.

The lioness of her soul,

The dragon of her heart and body,

The she-wolf in her mind,

Her inner warriors,

She was not alone,

To face the world,

Yet she felt abandoned,

Still, she stood tall,

Standing before the world,

With defiance in her eyes,

She seemed unbreakable,

That is until the world stepped in,

The world had noticed the girl,

Brave and strong,

It pushed its abuse towards her,

She became bruised,

Battered by the storms,

Beaten by the winds,

Trapped in the tempest,

That we call life,

She was supposed to be unbreakable,

That was until she broke,

She fell,

Slipping into a sea,

Drowning in the sea of misery,

Her lungs became full,

Painfully so,

No sounds escaped,

As she stayed silent,

Her lungs began to burn,

The air slipping away,

She went unnoticed by many,

Yet her warriors mourned,

Her wolf let out a stricken howl,

Her lioness let out a cry that shook the ground,

Her dragons’ flames engulfed her to push her forward,

yet the phoenix was silent,

the girl who was strong,

seeming so capable,

with the ability to make a change,

to change the world for the better,

and so, she faced the world,

unaccompanied,

Only she and her warriors,

yet the world had different plans for its girl,

a different way to show its love,

and she began to rip at the seams,

crumbling under the weight,

destroying herself,

her thoughts becoming knives,

words becoming venom,

dripping from her lips,

her wolf ran tail between its legs,

letting out a pleading whine to her partners,

as her mind became a prison,

her emotions the bars,

hate became the locks,

hope the keys,

pain standing guard,

led on by the world,

the girl who could always laugh,

could no longer laugh,

she could not laugh it all away,

as terror filled her,

no amount of laughter,

could free her of it,

she dropped her fake smile.

And her armor began to crack,

Instantly,

Words began to slip through the racks,

Thoughts rising to the surface of her mind,

And soon her armor was destroyed,

Her heart was left open,

And under attack,

Her lungs began to fill once more,

Her voice trapped again,

As she tried to scream,

Tried to plead,

No sounds slipped from her lips,

Her throat became a cage,

Full of her cries,

Trapping her pleas,

She even tried to beg,

Tried to beg the world to change,

To be different,

To start anew,

To try once more,

Her dragon hung her head in shame at the sight,

She was hoping for better,

Hopping for anything,

But there was no reply,

She prayed silent prayers,

That became wishes,

Unspoken hope,

As the world turned its back on her,

Covered its ears,

Sealed its mouth,

She shed a tear,

And began to cry,

She cried till she became numb,

As her eyes dried,

The trails of crystals that formed,

From her eyes to her cheeks,

Glinted in the sun,

Though her eyes were now dull,

No life to be found in them,

No longer wide,

No longer filled with defiance,

No hope,

no wonder,

nothing was left to be found in her eyes,

her dragon frozen in fear,

heart ranching fear,

it turned and scurried away and went deep,

folding in on itself,

closing itself off,

locking itself away in her chest,

her ribs standing as a prison cage,

its only company her useless lungs,

wrapped in tattered armor,

now looking like a small songbird in a cage,

with two broken wings,

the girl tried to go back,

to fake a smile,

as the weight,

of the world slipped down,

falling onto her fragile shoulders,

heavy and cold,

the girl who never seemed able,

to give up,

did just that,

she stopped caring,

her hope disappeared,

no longer did she want to help,

herself,

others,

she just no longer cared what happened to anyone,

the girl who would never give up,

gave up,

she lost herself,

along her way,

along her journey,

the world saw her,

saw what she had become,

the world grew silent.

For the girl it had first met,

The girl it had adored,

The girl it had abused,

Pushed so hard,

She was gone,

The surprise the world felt,

Was beyond its ability,

The girl it had loved,

the girl it had tormented,

she was not the girl the world knew,

yet it still stayed silent,

unwilling to share its secrets,

her journey,

it had only just begun,

the girl was looking for herself as she traveled,

she traveled roads,

unknown,

she tries to think back, tries to remember,

when,

were,

she had lost herself,

the answer coming as a shock,

for in her memory,

she was there one day,

then she was gone the next,

she is lost,

she knows she is lost,

in more ways than one,

she isn’t even sure,

how to find herself again,

how to get herself back again,

she doesn’t know if she can,

at least for now,

for now, her mind,

flashes its teeth,

like a scared pup,

before cowering away,

deep in her prison,

needing time to reconcile,

her soul,

once a wild lioness,

now lowered her head,

defeated and tired,

ran with her tail between her legs,

facing time and space,

searching the desolate world,

looking for what was lost,

for now, her dragon stays hidden in her heart,

disguised,

as a wounded songbird,

yet there came a flicker of hope,

it appeared when she least expected it,

it began as a small flicker,

becoming a blaze,

a creature in her own right,

her phoenix,

proud,

yet she dipped her head,

as she entered the darkness,

understanding the girl’s pain,

forehead to forehead,

joining her,

she whispered to the girl,

solemn sweet tones,

as she sat with the girl,

softly and quietly,

in the dark,

sparks flying as she settled,

her light growing brighter,

the light of hope,

it waited patiently,

till the time was right,

till it was time for the girl,

for her partners to stand again.

The phoenix,

She took her chance,

as the girl relaxed,

she lulled her teary-eyed girl to sleep,

to let her rest,

she rose into the sky,

letting her flames engulf her,

her body now scattered across the ground like satin,

floating lazily across the ground,

her strength being renewed,

a spark being all it took,

and in an instant, she became new,

as they were enticed,

her ashes to rise,

stronger than ever,

her determination growing,

she let out a cry,

a call to her partners,

and they began to stir,

responding to her call,

responding to her strength,

the girls mind jumped at the sound,

breaking the bars,

escaping the prison,

no longer shrinking into the night,

a wolf standing with her teeth bared,

challenging the world,

daring it to take her down again,

a threat to defend the girl,

the lioness,

her soul rose from the depths,

a queen among her kind,

she stepped from the shadows,

letting a roar,

slip,

and rip from her throat, letting her victorious return be known,

with a flash of claws in warning,

warning the world to step back from her girl,

her dragons lifted its head letting its disguise fall,

spreading her wings wide and proud,

from the shell of a broken songbird her dragon broke free,

standing tall, flames licking her lips,

rushing from her throat,

the girls body felt alive again,

filled with renewed vigor,

as her eyes opened,

shining fierce,

bold,

once disregarded by the world,

a world she would not let win.

She was not alone,

Her warriors behind her,

An army at her side,

She was new,

Never to be her old self,

Yet she was herself again,

Only she had changed,

The ground shook with her every step,

The world would soon be afraid,

Once a girl,

Now a woman,

A queen,

She lifted her crown,

A crown she had forgotten,

That had fallen a long time ago,

And placed it upon her head,

A queen,

Ready to take on the world.
