Nobody Tells You This About Success

The truth behind “making it” is not what you think.

By Umar AminPublished 6 months ago 4 min read

Success doesn’t feel like you think it will. And honestly? That’s what makes it real.

Let’s get one thing straight:

Success isn’t fireworks, gold trophies, or some neon “you did it!” sign blinking above your head. It doesn’t hit you like a movie ending. It creeps in. Quietly. On a Tuesday. When you're exhausted.

Nobody tells you that.

They talk about chasing it. Hustling for it. Sacrificing sleep, weekends, your social life.

But what happens after you finally get it? What then?

I’ll tell you: it’s complicated. It’s messy. And it's rarely what you expected.

1. The Arrival is Silent

The first time I reached a big goal, I expected... something. I don’t even know what. Applause? Tears? A spiritual awakening?

Instead, I refreshed the screen, saw the number I had dreamed about for months... and just sat there.

Blank. Kind of numb.

It was underwhelming, honestly.

Why didn’t I feel different?

Why didn’t my inner voice shut up and let me enjoy it?

That’s the thing. Success doesn’t always feel successful. Sometimes, it just feels... like the next thing on your to-do list.

2. Not Everyone Will Clap

Here’s a bitter pill:

Some people will distance themselves when you grow.

Not because you did anything wrong. But because your wins remind them of their own stagnation.

I learned this the hard way.

I wanted to celebrate — to share this huge moment with the people who knew my struggle. And a few of them did celebrate... briefly. But others went quiet. Cold, even.

And I questioned myself.

Did I get too big for them?

Or did I simply stop shrinking to stay small?

Sometimes growth means outgrowing people. That’s just real life.

3. It Gets Lonely

No one tells you that the top — or even halfway up — can feel isolating.

You’re surrounded by people, sure. But fewer of them get you. Or your why.

You start craving different conversations.

You say no to parties that used to light you up.

You want silence instead of noise.

Depth instead of drama.

And yeah, sometimes that silence echoes in weird, uncomfortable ways. But in that silence, you meet yourself. The real you. Not the one performing to keep others comfortable.

4. Imposter Syndrome Isn’t Done With You

You think success will kill the doubt, right?

Nope. It just changes costume.

Now it says things like:

“Are you sure you’re good enough for this?”

“Maybe this was a fluke.”

“Any minute now, they’ll figure you out.”

You can be hitting milestones and still feel like a total fraud.

And that sucks.

But hear this: You’re not alone. We all feel it. We just hide it better the higher we climb.

5. Your Definition Will Evolve

What felt like “making it” last year might feel meaningless now.

That’s okay.

You’re allowed to change the rules.

You’re allowed to want less — or more.

You’re allowed to say, “That used to matter to me. It doesn’t anymore.”

Growth isn’t just upward. It’s inward, sideways, even backward sometimes.

6. Money Feels Good — But Isn’t Everything

Yes, money helps.

It buys options, peace of mind, a bit of breathing room. But if you were empty before the money, you’ll still be empty after.

You can’t fill a spiritual void with digital commas.

Believe me, I’ve tried.

The real richness?

Peace. Boundaries. Sleep. Laughing without guilt.

Doing work that lights you up, not burns you out.

7. You’ll Grieve the Old You

Nobody tells you that success comes with loss.

Not just of people or places — but of versions of you.

You’ll miss your broke self, oddly.

The one that dreamed out loud, tried things recklessly, hoped with wide eyes.

That version didn’t know burnout. Deadlines. Taxes. Imposter syndrome.

But you needed to let go of them to become who you are now.

And that’s not sad.

That’s sacred.

So… What’s the Point?

If all of this sounds kind of heavy, good. It is heavy sometimes.

But that’s what makes success so meaningful.

Not the money. Not the flexes.

But the fact that you kept going through all of this.

Because here’s the truth no one wants to say out loud:

👉 Success is peace, not pressure.

👉 Success is alignment, not applause.

👉 Success is knowing who you are — and not needing anyone else to validate it.

Final Thoughts (and a Truth Bomb)

Don’t chase someone else’s version of success.

Define your own.

Re-define it.

Break it apart and rebuild it a hundred times if you have to.

Just make sure it feels like you when you get there.

You don’t have to pretend it’s easy. Or glamorous. Or picture-perfect.

You just have to keep going.
